Depends on what you want and your experience. Like comparing a Mercedes to a Honda. Honda will get you where need to go but the Mercedes would be a lot nicer, with a lot more features. Been smoking/cooking with a full size akorn for years and love it, not sure I would ever pay the premium for a Kamado Joe or an egg. Maybe someday, the Akorns are what they are. Just bought my first Akorns Jr. for my camper this year, looking forward to you using it.
For all those on the fence, yes, this is WAY BETTER than a Smokey Joe. The (Sometimes) $299 Kamado Joe Jr is Much better than this, not so much in function per say, but durability and quality is much higher. And yes, I have 7 Kamados in the family at the moment.
Kamado Joe is way better in every way but cost. The question is, do you want to buy cheap or pay extra for quality?

This is more portable, but the Joe JR will outlast and outcook it. Better heat retention on ceramic. The nice thing about the Akorns is they heat up quickly, that ceramic on the Joes really soaks up heat. But it's also why the Joe Jr is better for temperature regulation. Also Joe Jr has stainless grates as the Akorn has Cast iron, so you have to oil them for rust protection when not used often.
I prefer my Honda over my bmw if anyone is asking!
I have one had 2 and they are amazing. I love to pick one of these over my other 7ish grills/smokers . You can do a nice hunk of meat on it it holds temps great, can be hard to bring the heat down if you let it get high tho. The top vent has a piece on it that can melt so be careful if grilling at temps near 600 or 700+. Doesn't need a ton of fuel to cook for long periods of time. I did get it when it was on sale for $25.
Have the Kamado, constantly having to rebuy thermometer for it, the insides also crack, need replacement. Isn't worth that $$$ price in my opinion. That said the bigger the better, for smoking or cooking pizza.
Inside I mean the ring, the stuff inside. Outside tough as nails.
