Ouch. A pull-through knife sharpener is never a deal, IMHO. They remove too much steel, shortening the life of your knife, and often leave a ragged, torn edge that may feel toothy and sharp, but is really quite rough. Not to mention they usually sharpen at only one angle. The adjustable or spring loaded ones are pretty bad at applying even pressure against the blade. Some folks swear by them because they are cheap and quick, and work just fine on knives you look at as eventually disposable, but I would never use one on a knife I cared about. But that's just my opinion.

What are your alternatives for similar price? Not much, really. But if you want to learn to sharpen just about any knife you will ever own with less damage than most pull-through shapeners, I recommend a Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener [amazon.com] as about the best $35 you can spend for an all in one tool. Here [youtube.com] is a really good video on how to use it.

Or you can build a kit on the dirt cheap using budget and household items. Like a coarse double sided stone from the dollar store, the unglazed bottom of a ceramic mug or plate, and an old leather belt glued to a board to make a hone. And a knife steel out of an old knife set from the thrift store is always good for truing up any fold-over on a blade before you actually sharpen it. A pull-through sharpener simply grinds off any folded over steel on a fine knife edge if you don't true it up first. And you check for edge fold over by pulling a finger nail down the blade and seeing if it catches or goes TING on the edge. (Don't cut yourself!) There are tons of articles on how to care for your knife's edge on the cheap if you use your Google Fu.

One thing I do like about this particular pull through is that it has a handle to hold that keeps your hand out of the blade's path when sharpening, which puts it a step above many of the pull-throughs I've seen.
