One worthy note, EV charger and installation is tax deductible at 30%, just need to fill out the tax form [irs.gov] when you do your taxes next year
Important Note: after 12/31/2022, (as in, now) the EV charger 30% deduction was changed to apply to chargers installed in rural areas or in low income census tracts.

So, many of the folks buying a $50K car may not qualify based on the location of their home.

You can see the actual text of the law and some detailed parsing of it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/evchargi...ax_credit/

The gist is that the lawmakers seemed to be trying to encourage installation of commercial EV charging in rural and poor areas, but did not draw a distinction between commercial charging and residential charging. Or, intentionally did not want to subsidize rich EV buyers.

I placed an order for existing inventory. Nice price drop after and Tesla automatically applied. Quote from Tesla insurance for MYLR is $60/mo. $20 savings over existing hybrid Volvo xc90. I used the tax credit last year in Volvo. It was non refundable so I needed to come in at least 7500 short on FIT to use full amount, which I did. I'm targeting the same this year with Tesla. Fed govt covers most of my car payment for 1st year of ownership. Slickkkk

It's the amount of federal taxes that the government expects from you based on your income and deductions. Has nothing to do with what you've paid already and how much you owe or are owed when you file your taxes. Based on your income and deductions, how much will you have paid the government in federal taxes when all is said and done? If that number is >7500, you'll get the full tax credit. If less than 7500 you'll get whatever that number is. If zero, you get nothing.
Thank you! I thought I would have to file a W4 and estimate how much to withhold so I owed exactly $7500. And the estimate would have to be right on the money because if you owe too much you pay penalties.

You have to owe a good amount to pay penalties for under withholding. Even if you do it's small. For example, I just filed 2022. My FIT came in 9500 short, I applied ev tax credit and my amount owed was reduced to 2000. No penalty.

Currently there is no provision that keeps you from doing this every year, so you can rinse and repeat and live essentially car payment free if you choose a cheaper model.

Lot of competition coming out this year in the EV space.
At least when purchasing products, there's always an inherent advantage in buying the popular product. Especially when, the margin between the number of Tesla's on the road and other BEV's is absolutely massive. There's infinitely more third party and independent support, information, and data available for Teslas. Also, they have an extensive working charging network. I know I know, everyone is insecure and doesn't want others to think they like Elon, or they're just a sheep buying the popular thing.

Everyone is entitled to their own decision making methods, and if you want to virtue signal about how you'll never buy this or that product for moral reasons, or parrot a bunch articles that enforce your existing belief, go for it.

My opinion on BEV's; if you have a home (especially a garage) where you can install a charger and you're in the market for a new car, you'd be foolish not to consider and explore BEV options right now.

If you need a new car now consider the Tesla. Here are the reasons I sold mine, and will not be purchasing an ICE (especially a Tesla) car in the near future. The right to repair is a huge deal for people who care to keep their cars for more than 50k miles. 90% of your repairs will need to go through tesla, since parts are not available directly from them. This means long waits, dealer mark-ups, and shotty work. I have been to the service center over 10 times in my 3 year ownership, many time for the same issue or a another issue caused by not re-assembling the car correctly. Just buy a Toyota and enjoy peace of mind or wait a few years for more manufactures to introduce EVs. A model 3 at 35k is appealing but I would go with the civic or camry.

I thought Tesla wasn't eligible for $7,500 incentive after 4/18 or whenever. If still eligible I'll have no choice but to pull the trigger if Y goes under $45k to qualify for full $4k NJ incentive.
In that "dream" scenario it'll be
$45k - $7.5k federal - $4k state - $4k employer incentive - no NJ sales tax. Yeah, I'll buy a 5th car if I can get a Y for $29.5 plus destination charges. So what if it is white. I'll wrap it.

new model y long range is 40k after incentives, so only a 3k difference

where did you get 40K for Model Y long range for 40K?, it's 42,490 if you qualify for $7500, plus you have to pay destination charge $1400 and $250 order fees

The repair issue concerns me a lot, actually. No other car brand I'm aware of refuses to sell parts and prevents their vendors from selling parts.

I'm a long-time BMW owner and you typically pay 50-66% for the exact same part when purchased as "OE" instead of BMW branded. And I can get parts in a few days and do the work myself.

I would love to see someone manufacture an EV with the simplicity of a VW Beetle. I saw the innards of a Ford pickup EV and it's insanely complex… when you consider it's a large battery (made up of individually replaceable cells), electric motor (which should be rebuildable), a cooling system, computer management system/sensors, and a standard braking/suspension system.

Individual battery cells should be user replaceable. It should be a law… otherwise, these environmentally friendly cars become an environmental nightmare.

How much is it to charge at a Tesla supercharger station? I live 1 mile away from a Tesla charging station, not sure if it has supercharging or not.
It varies, the ones near me cost $0.35/kWh. I've never been to one. If you're asking because you're planning on regularly charging at them, I wouldn't buy an EV. You lose the convenience of an EV if you're not regularly charging at home/work. Superchargers are for road trips. While still may be cheaper than gas, it costs me over double than charging at home. Between driving an EV and plugin probably 20K miles now, I've never made a special trip to a public charging station yet.

If you are interested in buying a Tesla, Guess how much it would cost to repair a little dent on Tesla Model Y?
