So much bad info. If your total taxes are over the 7500 it MAKES zero difference if you withheld the money from paychecks or not!!! You would still get a check for $7500 if you buy a car that qualifies for the full federal credit. This has nothing to do if wther you owe 7500 or you paid 7500.
Most people dont understand that paying a portion of your tax due every month is the same thing as paying it once when filing taxes, but see below. Same reason why people have no clue how installments work.

caveat - you can consider tax due as an interest free loan, IF you dont have a underpayment penalty and you actually invested it)

Go drive both?? tesla test drive takes about 30 minutes and you dont need to talk to a sales person

prius test drive probably takes 3 hours as a man who eats too much donuts and flunked out of college will pressure you to finance the car for $7,000 over sticker and if you dont you wasted his time.
I tried to test drive both. Both have no models to test drive sadly

I drive a paid-off 12 year old Honda Civic with just 96,000 miles on it. My last fill up was at $2.94/gal and I probably use about 20 gallons per month, so maybe about $60/month in gas. Each fill up takes about 3-4 minutes. The Civic just needs a $40 oil change once a year for how much I drive. Full coverage insurance for the Civic and a old pickup we use when needed costs just $760/year. I just don't see any point changing from gas to an electric. The calculus just it is not there for me.
Yep nobody needs a 40k+ car. No one is buying a Tesla to "save gas". They just want the cool tech.

Incorrect— It is a tax credit, not a rebate. My tax man informed me of this. Also, it is one time, meaning it cannot be carried forward in case you were not able to exhaust the entire credit in your next filing. I would owe roughly 3k in taxes next year, the 3k would be subtracted from the 7.5k Thats the only credit i would have received. I would lose the rest 4.5k since I did not owe the IRS $7500. Hope that helps,
You need a better tax man

Here's how finances around this work:

1. You are poor (been there) thus you can't afford this car, and already don't pay taxes, in fact get free gov money, nuff said. (The gov is not giving ANYONE 7500!)

2. You make up to 150k (single) or 300k (married) then pay actual taxes (generally) so you can get 7500 of those taxes wiped off your tax bill. Assuming you already paid in and/or owe 7500, or more. The gov gave you no money!

3. You make over those limits, you either live somewhere you can't afford, or manage your money poorly, and choose to complain about your entitlement (or lack of, in this case) since you don't get the 7500.

Nobody can get mad about #2, if you manage your finances correctly, are comfortably in the middle class, you can now (maybe) afford a car that was previously out of reach.

If you are #1, stop complaining and do something about it. Maybe learn how to do your taxes and go work at H&R Block doing taxes of those too dumb to do it themselves, you've stepped up in the world and can (maybe) afford this deal.

If you're in the third group, this is where YOU should be paying more taxes anyway, so zip it, and stop being selfish.
What about those that have always made under the 300k threshold, but 2023 is looking good and it will be the first year they break 300k (joint).

Cars have gone up so much in price, in size, bloody SUVs everywhere (one of the few things Tesla gets right is still making a proper sedan) along with everything else like groceries.

The reason for this isn't rising manufacturing costs or inflation etc, its rising profits and corporate greed. Now its become abundantly clear that many companies raised prices during Covid not because of any difficulties but to make more profit, and they aren't coming down.

Cars should be much cheaper. Our tax dollars should be spent on public transport not giving billion dollar handouts to selfish aholes like Musk who thinks his shitty hyperloop is the future, and all he has to to do is give a few million to politicians to get his permits.

Just open the US market to foreign competition, like most foreign countries allow US carmakers to sell there. Chinese EVs sell great in Europe and NZ/Aus where they compete with Tesla, Germans, Japanese, and for lower prices.

You can use your 2022 income to claim the tax credit if you buy an electric car this year. You can choose to use your 2022 or 2023 income.

With the glut of chips and memory, all prices are bound to come back to earth. I'd wait rather than have buyer remorse. Cash is king in this high interest rate economy.
High Interest rates? Maybe compared to the last decade, but historically they are still low.

You need to do some homework!

You don't know what is no luxury compact suv? So many brands, Honda Toyota Mazda Ford Subaru ... have some common sense man
Again, name a well-equipped suv in this size class for 30k. I don't care if you call it luxury or not luxury.

And to be clear here...I am not a proponent of Tesla. But to say that you can find a comparable nice ICE suv for 30k is just a gross over-exaggeration.

nobody wants to drive a Civic. And gas in CA is $5+/gal so shutup. Every fill is $80+ and I get only 20mi per gal for a V6, which is slow 0-60 compared to a Tesla.
Model Y is the new Civic in semi luxury car.

Again, give me a SPECIFIC example (so i can tell you how wrong you are).

Those lists don't mean anything because they all look at starting msrp. You can't just look at some car's starting msrp. Those cheaper trim levels are trash. You have to compare mid to upper trim levels. Model Y only has a single trim level and the only major options are FSD, wheels, and paint color. That's it. So you can't compare a car with cloth seating, no heated seats, etc. Also, a third of those on the lists are subcompacts. Even some of those so-called "compacts" on the lists are noticeably smaller than the model y. So take away the subcompacts and smaller compacts, and none of those on the list with mid to high trim level costs 30k or less.

Well I'm not an expert and haven't looked at new cars and def not SUVs. From your post it appeared most a 30k SUV didn't exist so I was curious and looked on kbb, edmunds etc and found a lot. Obviously there will be extra fees added on etc, You also said 'in this class' not exact same features. Pretty sure some of these can be configured to have tech like HUD, 360 camera etc and for hybrid, for maybe 35k.

This is not a good time to be buying new cars. Prices are falling, economy sucks, new cars are a waste of money by definition due to depreciation. There are tons of used/CPO car deals suiting any budget

M3/Y are still great cars, I just think they are overpriced.

Except most aren't going to carry only comprehensive coverage but will also carry collision which is typically required by the lender. Collision costs a lot more than comp and liability. What are the numbers for that? That's a more relevant number and one I could see having a higher rate increase due to all the tech in these cars.
It's almost like the insurance I linked covered both collision AND comprehensive. But why try and actually understand something, even when the citation is spoon fed to you, when you can remain ignorant and argumentative.
