Detailed Answer:
Step 1: Look at Line 11 on your 2022 Tax return (Form 1040).
Step 1a: For the vast majority of taxpayers this won't apply: Add to Step 1 any income from Puerto Rico you excluded, any housing exclusion foreign income you claimed (Lines 45 and 50 of Form 2555), and American Samoa residential income excluded (Line 15 of Form 4563).
Step 2: If that number is less than:
$300,000 Married Filing Jointly
$225,000 Head of Household
$150,000 Single and any other filing status
then continue to Step 3. Otherwise, you currently DO NOT qualify for any rebate, and will need to reduce that number on your 2023 Tax return below those limits. You can reduce that number by traditional 401k contributions, or some small-business options.
Step 3: Look at Line 24 on your 2022 Tax return (Form 1040).
- If it is greater than $7,500 and your income in 2023 stays the same or increase, you will get the full $7,500.
- If it is less than that, you get that amount (assuming your income stays the same). If your income increases then you may get a larger refund, up to $7,500.
In other words, in order to get the full tax credit, you must OWE at least $7500 in taxes and be under the income limits.
You absolutely CAN NOT carry over for a few years, or even one more year. It is a one time credit. Any unused credit is LOST!

EV good if you have a dedicated charging station at home.
if you live in an apartment complex or condo its not as consumer friendly, unless you want to pay up the wazoo at supercharger stations and inconvenience yourself by having to go there every time to charge. Go to plugshare.com to see how much you will be paying in your area. Just multiply cents * 45kwh (assuming you're charging from 20% to 80%). For my area I would be paying $20-$25 per charge at a supercharger station. At home, with the national average electrity rate of 0.14 / kwh, it would cost $6
if you live in california, don't forget that you can also get another $2k in CVRP rebate. you get a check in the mail but the wait time is long to get it.
also don't forget about the single occupant HOV lane decal you can sign up at the DMV website.
basic autopilot is more than sufficient. autopilot still has a long ways to go imo. definitely not worth getting the advanced AP and definitely not full self driving at $15k. as MKBHD always says, don't buy a product on a promise of features yet to come.
also, make sure you setup your electricity usage to "time of use" or EV-specific plan as your bill will assuredly go up. Don't be on those tiered plans. Yes, you will end up saving money compared to ICE vehicles paying for gas, unless you get a hybrid, which is a bit more comparable, especially in areas where electricity is expensive.
additionally, people forget that you need to install a wall connector or mobile connector in your home. equipment costs $230 for the mobile connector +$45 for the nema 14-50 adapter, which is good enough especially if you do scheduled charging at night to save on electricity. installation itself will vary depending on your region and how much electricians will charge you, but it can get expensive. just make sure you're not getting ripped off as electricians are aware of the EV craze and asking for higher premiums on them. installation can go anywhere from $1k-$2k+. (according to poster SamirPD, you can ask the electrictian to install a dryer outlet and it should save you money and prevent you from being ripped off). One worthy note, EV charger and installation is tax deductible at 30%, just need to fill out the tax form [irs.gov] when you do your taxes next year. EDIT: SD poster hiro916 indicated that the 30% tax deduction only pertains to low income or rural tract areas, so YMMV [reddit.com].
as for car insurance, I'm paying $95 a month through Geico, but thats with a robust policy.
if you are impatient like me, and want to get one right away without having to wait, go to the waitingfortesla discord server [discord.com] and setup alerts for any time a Model Y drops in your local area. You have to act quick as they get snatched up relatively quickly. You can see whats in inventory on their website too [waitingfortesla.com]. Don't expect to see base model Y LR coming into inventory. If you want to pick something up quick settle for the 20 inch induction wheels (costs $2k extra) as they are more readily available. You can always sell the tires if you want to recoup some of the costs and get an aftermarket hubcap that look better than stock anyhow.

once you pick up your car you have 100 miles and 7 days to report any defects. panels gaps aren't as much of a problem anymore compared to years past, but be on the lookout for them. paint quality isn't so great out of the factory, mine came with swirl marks all over and had to get it paint corrected.

in terms of accessories, the only real requirement imo that you need are mud flaps. reason being is because without them, the rear passenger quarter panels will get hit with rock chips very quickly. tesmanian is a good aftermarket seller, or you can just opt for ones you see on amazon. if you want to go deeper into accessories temu is a great site for low prices compared to amazon.

my personal thoughts on ownership thus far. overall i like it. i am using it as a daily driver / commuter car. i don't think of Model Y and 3 as a 'luxury' vehicle. I see Tesla as a software company trying to be an automaker, and the legacy automakers are trying to be more like Tesla by being more tech focused. Teslas are continuously getting software updates to improve year over year. Interior build quality is spartan, and the ride quality need some improvement, especially if you are in an area with poor road conditions. if you're really into tech like me, this is the car for you. Performance vehicles I still prefer ICE cars over EV's however. first thing you will notice in an EV though, is the instant torque. that is what will grab you immediately.

I did a map of charging along the route and some areas are questionable for non teslas. One area the options were at car dealerships which may not be welcoming or blocked if closed etc.
Decided MYLR is my best bet even though 95%+ is local driving. Don't ever want to be in a situation where I regret having range anxiety on long trips due to charging infrastructure.

Slew of data there- but I'm seeing deliveries in the last week that ranged from 9 days to 51 days order date to delivery date.... it's going to vary some by where you live and what options you picked too (they tend to do cars in batches, and tend to try and match builds with nearer factory when possible).

You can find anecdotes about delivery problems from every car maker out there. My own new-from-Japan Lexus had more initial quality issues than my Tesla did, and Lexus consistently ranks as the "best" brand for this stuff. Things happen.

This is why you inspect a car at delivery- and should do so thoroughly regardless of brand.
At that point you've got a couple choices-
If it's really bad, reject delivery, wait for a new one.
If it's reasonably simple to fix (a bumper misalignment for example is typically a very easy fix) get in writing it will be repaired at no cost to you, and reject it if they won't... (this is what happened with my Lexus, I got confirmation in writing the issues I found at delivery would be addressed-- and they were)-- do NOT just "take their word" regardless of the brand of car.
A better data point than 'I can find someone complaining on the internet' about it is the actual rate of warranty claims for problems after delivery.
Which for Tesla is on average slightly better than Toyota, and MUCH lower than most of the industry (Hyundai included).

Figure 2 is the one you want-- Average warranty claim rate as a % of sales, broken down by car company, with data for 2020 and 2021 shown there.
VW is hilariously bad at 5.3% and 4.5% respective years. Kia and Hyundai aren't great either at 3.2/3.0 and 2.4/2.7. Sticking just to brands commonly available in the US the 2 best performers on the chart are Toyota at 1.4%/1.0% and Tesla at 1.1% and...1.1%. So averaging the two years they have even fewer warranty claims than Toyota does.
New cars with some damage are more common than you'd think though- Now, one thing that IS different is because Tesla has no 3rd party dealers YOU (a prospective new owner) are usually the first who will notice... The downside is it "looks bad" the upside is they aren't hiding damage from you on your new car like traditional dealers may do.

That's an example of a guy who picked up a new VW that "looked" fine initially-- but with some digging he found out it had $1400 of damage before delivery and was repaired... then he found more damage just after that that had been "repaired"
This happens quite a bit... sometimes the dealer will tell you, sometimes they won't...that Toyota thread earlier mentions that too- it's state by state by usually there's some threshold like 5% of MSRP or something the repairs must exceed before disclosure is needed- and they won't always do it even then.
Personally I'd rather "know" before delivery what's wrong or not, but some folks are happy if it looks good at pickup even if stuff was done to it without them being informed- YMMV there.

What a weird story...
Right off the bat we have things with low credibility- like claiming it took him 17 hours to drive the 624.6 mi from North Long Beach to Burney falls.
Google says that's a 10 hour drive without stops.
10-15 minutes at a supercharger adds ~150-180 miles of range to your vehcile.
So let's pretend he has the WORST 2017 Model S possible.... the S60, which they haven't even sold since April 2017- which only has 210 miles of range.
He would have needed to stop 3 times for 10-15 minutes on top of the 10 hours of actual driving.
If he were driving the largest battery S sold that year instead (335 miles of range) he'd have needed a total of 20-30 minutes of stopping.
How'd he get an extra 7 hours from at MOST 45 minutes of stopping? Is he counting stopping to sleep for the night?
Because that seems... dishonest.
Even if we pretend he stopped at the nearest-to-camp charger (more on that later) and charged all the way to 100% there, a thing you don't normally need, or even want, to do on a road trip, but MIGHT make sense if you plan to camp for a few days- that's typically less than 1 hour of time. Where'd the other 5-6 hours go?
You generally get all the charge you need in like 10-15 minutes for road trips... but even if you have no idea how EVs work and want to "fill it up" entirely that's not going to take even ONE full hour, let alone 3.
Some other nonsense from the story includes him saying he didn't realize you used more range going up hill.
Well, of course you do. You use more gas that way too. Had he never driven any vehicle up hill before to be "surprised" by this?
Further- he claims he "had" to charge twice.... but that it used 30% of his battery to go one-way to the charger. If it took 60% of his battery roundtrip, and he did it twice, then he could've only gone ONCE and had more net charge. Because math.
He also appears to claim "Dunnigan CA was the last charger- but there's one much closer at Mt Shasta (and it's less than 75 minutes away too)
While we're at it-- he appears to have not bothered looking for EVEN NEARER chargers- of which there's several... just not Tesla branded.
For example less than 2 miles from the park is an RV camp with 30 and 50 amp electrical hookups that are rentable. Those are slower than superchargers, but he wouldn't have allegedly burned 30% of his battery, one way, to get there would he? In fact if he drove the 1.8 miles there, charged for 1 full hour at 50 amps, then drove back, he'd have added MORE charge than a 30%-each-way trip to a supercharger- while saving 2 hours each time supposedly.
Even better would've been- just camp AT the RV site. That's why it's there. He could've woken up to a FULL battery every morning while still running his climate all night (and all day!) And it's 3 minutes from the place he actually camped so not like he couldn't have enjoyed the falls he claims were the reason he was going.
All that took about 5 minutes to find.
Add the fact he was "camping" in the Tesla- that is leaving it turned on with climate control running all night-- and you've got.... a very non traditional use case for a vehicle.... (that still would've been fine if he'd bothered to google the fact there was an RV campsite with power less than 2 miles from him)
Try "camping" in your gasoline car for days with the engine running the whole time and see how well that works for you

I mean, I already pointed out where many of his claims were not actually facts, so...no they're really NOT poor for that at all.
Dude ignored multiple, much nearer, chargers vs the one he, falsely, claimed was the "last" one nearby.
He somehow took at least 8 times longer to charge on the actual drive to the place than it should actually take to charge- so either he's outright lying about the travel time or he was plugging into a normal wall socket instead of a supercharger each time.
And even THEN his only real problem was he was also camping in the car for days running the climate control while doing so. So it wasn't even the 'road trip' part that was an issue. A gas car can't do that at all so it'd be WORSE for this trip.
And even the camping issue wouldn't have been one if he'd taken 5 minutes to look for other, nearer, chargers. Including the one at a campground right next door
If anything the only worthwhile lesson from the story is:
Unlike gasoline cars- your Tesla lets you sleep in air conditioned comfort while camping, it'll just require a few minutes of pre-trip planning on your part.

I was concerned that upon submitting a ticket they could/would just come back and say that's "within spec." But like I said, I thought it was pretty small detail and it wasn't a big deal. Submitted ticket and the fixed the gap on the A pillar. They weren't able to fix the rear quarter panel gap as the panel can't be moved. I was fine with it.
But some of the pictures I've seen at how bad the gaps are I'm amazed and would not take delivery. But like I said, Tesla isn't going to beg you and go out of their way to assure you of anything.

Not at all-- if you'd bothered to (ever) read the sources debunking the FUD in here you'd have seen dealers from OTHER brands said similar things about delivery damage being common.
It happens all the time... it's nothing to worry about... we can fix it for you no problem.... (or in one case the dealer just lying about how much pre-pickup damage they'd already fixed without telling the buyer). All from non-tesla dealers.
This type of issue is common. Dealers fixing it is common. Literally nothing about it is unique to Tesla other than you're more likely to NOT having it fixed without your knowledge or consent before pickup.
Which seems better to me, but maybe you prefer an ignorance is bliss approach to receive a new car.
So just like any brand when picking up a new car- Inspect it for fit, finish, and damage carefully. Take your time, don't allow yourself to be rushed. If you find any concerns you don't think can be easily/properly addressed- reject the vehicle. If you find ones you believe CAN be addressed, get, in writing that they will be before accepting the vehicle.

Let's be clear. There is a difference between DAMAGE and QUALITY CONTROL.
Yes, cars can be damaged after they leave the factory, in many ways, but we are talking panel gaps, doors that won't close properly, that is not the result of damage.
These issues are related to quality control, paint chips or dings are damage.
Yeah, that's the company I want to buy from!
