Would this drive be good for the ssd cache in a Synology NAS?
What's the max supported speed in that NAS?

Fellas, which one is better SAMSUNG 980 PRO SSD 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe Gen 4 or this WD - BLACK SN850X 1TB Internal SSD PCIe Gen 4 x4 NVMe?
This WD is better price and faster. However, if you can buy the 980 Pro for 10-20% less, then go with that.

Can I use this on a computer with older CPU, such as the 8th or 9th Intel?

Yes, you should be able to as long as you have a PCIE slot. This would fit into a PCIE gen 3 slot even though the drive itself is PCIE gen 4. With a gen 3 slot you will be limited to gent 3 speeds.

I don't have a machine that can utilize the gen 4 speeds, but the drive itself is a good drive and this is a good price, so I might get one to maybe in the future be able to take advantage of the speeds.

My crucial P3 just showed up at the BB store for pickup today. Think I'm gonna spend the extra $10 and do this instead.

Nvme for Plex is stupid. You can get way better bang for the buck with literally anything else.
I have one of those Dell really small form factor pcs that has room for 1 NVMe and 1 2.5" drive

Just to ask, why are 1tb sticks going for as low as $60 while the 2tb sticks go for more than double at $150? Newbie me would assume that you're paying per tb, so shouldn't the 2tb sticks just be double the price of the 1tb?
Not always. In regards to the the "typical" range of drives that consumers will be buying, there are often cases where you pay a premium for having more storage in one drive. That's not always the case; for example, right now you can get a 1TB Samsung 870 EVO SSD for $60 and the 2TB version for $120 at both Amazon and Best Buy. But, when it comes to the drives that are more in the "enthusiast" categories, you're generally paying more more per TB the higher you go.

And sometimes the opposite happens (more often for mechanicals). Looking at Amazon right now, the Western Digital Blue 5400 RPM hard drives, the 2TB drive is $50 while the 6TB is $100

I'm looking to see if my logic makes sense with the following.

If I put this drive in a 10gbps external enclosure and the drive hits around the same speed for sustained sequential writes (as per the linked testing below, I know it's not using an external enclosure), would it be correct to assume that this drive would hit the max of 10gbps but not get too warm since it's not pushing the limit of the drive's capabilities? I know there are many factors such as heat inside the enclosure and other things. But there's nothing I can find online answering if running a good gen 4 drive like this at 10gbps would have it run cooler than lets say a comparable gen 3 drive.

Thanks for any input.

It will never go that fast on an external enclosure. In fact, it is always slower when using an enclosure.

If you have a M.2 slot that can take NVME, then yes. You probably won't get those speeds though. The CPU has nothing to with it, it's the motherboard.

Are you saying that it would not hit 10gbps?
