Super fun car for the money, just know what you're getting into: at some point, something IS going to break, and you're going to have to take it apart to fix it. The faster the RC goes, the harder it runs into things.
I got tired of seeing this thing on my workbench after the third time it broke in a year with fairly light usage, and now it's been sitting in my garage for another year waiting for me to crack it open again (something with steering this time).
I didn't even drive it that hard--this car just kind of straddles the two worlds of "very fast hobby grade RC" and "budget plastic parts grinding on each other". By the time you replace all the plastic stuff with metal, you probably should've just bought a more expensive RC.
As great of a deal as this car is (I actually got it for $60 a couple Christmases back), it's kind of hard to recommend to someone who doesn't know what they're signing up for. It's going to absolutely blow the doors off of all the junk you've tried off-the-shelf at Target, but it also might leave you wishing you bought just a liiiiiitle bit more car.
If you do go with this I'd recommend ordering at least 3 to 5 spur gears and diff cups when you do. Ours chew through those like mad. Otherwise a great RC.
The Boost Line up looks really great as an alternative and probably why this one is marked down.
I have two of these for my Son and I, from previous sales and have been enjoying them for at least a couple years now. The only upgrade was a 7500 battery. I Highly recommend.

It's not my comment that you were replying to, but I actually wanted to ask the exact same question. My grandson about to turn 5 years-old, next month, and I have been thinking about getting him a (relatively) good-quality remote control truck.
If, as you suggest, I turn down the speed, would a 5-year-old be able to physically use the actual remote control to control the truck? Would the functioning be simple enough, for a 5-year-old to use and have fin with?
Also, if you/anyone knows of a better R/C truck option, for a 5-year-old boy, some recommendations (similar in price rang, around/under $75-$150) would be very much appreciated.
If you wouldn't mind replying again and sharing some more feedback, I would really appreciate it.
Anyway, they are impressively good at climbing over stuff in the yard. They aren't fast but they are entertaining. They are very sloppy in terms of handling but hey, half the time the 5 year old driver didn't bother steering at all.
The ARRMA kit is still pretty quick at slow speed. Not where it's likely to break a suspension arm but it would hurt if crashed into a kid. When the speed is dialed way down it actually doesn't go offroad as well as you might want since it effectively doesn't get full throttle. So if you need to climb something that needs a bit of throttle to get up, it will get stuck. The cheap Amazon trucks are geared really low. They aren't fast (figure a crisp walking speed) but they just climb over stuff so well. I think I spent $20 back in the day.
Thanks for the info! I'll probably pick this one up then. Do you have any recommendations for LiPo brands or where to get them? Looks like car/truck LiPos have a lower discharge rating so I probably shouldn't get batteries from my typical drone spots
I'm using China Hobby Lines on my bashers. You can easily swap the connector to match whatever lipo you want.

but I get the feeling they are a generic Chinese design
