Super fun car for the money, just know what you're getting into: at some point, something IS going to break, and you're going to have to take it apart to fix it. The faster the RC goes, the harder it runs into things.

I got tired of seeing this thing on my workbench after the third time it broke in a year with fairly light usage, and now it's been sitting in my garage for another year waiting for me to crack it open again (something with steering this time).

I didn't even drive it that hard--this car just kind of straddles the two worlds of "very fast hobby grade RC" and "budget plastic parts grinding on each other". By the time you replace all the plastic stuff with metal, you probably should've just bought a more expensive RC.

As great of a deal as this car is (I actually got it for $60 a couple Christmases back), it's kind of hard to recommend to someone who doesn't know what they're signing up for. It's going to absolutely blow the doors off of all the junk you've tried off-the-shelf at Target, but it also might leave you wishing you bought just a liiiiiitle bit more car.
If you do go with this I'd recommend ordering at least 3 to 5 spur gears and diff cups when you do. Ours chew through those like mad. Otherwise a great RC.

The Boost Line up looks really great as an alternative and probably why this one is marked down.
I have two of these for my Son and I, from previous sales and have been enjoying them for at least a couple years now. The only upgrade was a 7500 battery. I Highly recommend.

This is a fun car. Bought it for my son, we've had a blast running it around the yard and cul-de-sac. It's very fast for someone that's only used toy grade RC cars in the past. I've done zero upgrades and nothing has broken so far. No issue with battery life. We play for 15-20 min then go do something else.

Love it for the price.

I bought this a few years back and it's still running well. Great purchase and no repairs needed so far. I upgraded the size of the NiMH batteries. Had to buy some converter to connect with the body but I forgot which one.

For anyone with kids, I'd say 6 and above is a good age to use this in smaller spaces. My younger son is 4 and he just holds the throttle and crashes it into things.

Yes. I was in the same boat. Great starter truck. Just grab a 2s 5200mAh lipo, and you'll be all set. I assume you already have a hobby grade charger since you fly FPV. Gave mine to my daughter when I upgraded, but this one is a lot of fun.

Thanks for the info! I'll probably pick this one up then. Do you have any recommendations for LiPo brands or where to get them? Looks like car/truck LiPos have a lower discharge rating so I probably shouldn't get batteries from my typical drone spots

I'm thinking of buying this for my 8 year old grandson. Do I need to buy anything extra for him to be able to enjoy this? I'm confused by the website that says it may require extra things to work out of the box and then lists battery, charger, bodies, powerstage bundles. Thanks in advance for your help.

Love these things. Have one for each of the kids. Big props to Horizon Hobby for standing behind these with a warranty. One of the trucks showed up with a leaking shock and they sent me a pack of replacement shocks. One of the steering servos failed after a fair bit of use and they sent a replacement. One of the drive motors broke off at the wire connection to the motor and they replaced the motor entirely. They've sent me more in retail cost of replacement parts than the $100 I spent on the entire package.

One tip from the items that broke: Wire tie the drive motor wires to prevent them from bouncing around when in use. That bouncing ends up fatiguing the connection and causing it to break.

Diff cups with strip within a few uses and the battery tray is a real hard thing to deal with if you try and use it's "LiPo compatibility" be forewarned.

Black/Red [horizonhobby.com] is the same price.

Charging is great for ease of use. You will need to be a slight mechanic to tune a gas car and get it to run well my first gas RC was a steep learning curve and almost made me give up in it.

Do these Lipo Batteries need to be recharged differently than what is included? I'm brand new to RC Cars but I know my son will lose his poop when we drive this around.
Yes, you will need a different charger than what's included due to different battery chemistry. Note that LiPo is 'finicky' and not as 'foolproof' as NiMH etc. You should charge them in a LiPo bag that's fireproof in case of LiPo thermal runaway or other issues.

Don't let that scare you but also don't be careless. Over charging, blunt impact or puncturing the cells can lead to a significant fire.

These are great. I have upgraded mine to brushless and 3s and it's a beast.

The body is easy to break though. I am playing without body because it costs $40, lmao. I could just buy a new one

Did you have any issue trying to fit this battery in the truck? Looks like the battery I bought before and couldn't fit it in the battery housing with the wires.

I use duct tape to reinforce where the body connects to the frame, it helps prevent cracking. So far quite a few crashes/flips without major damage

No issues fitting the batteries in, there's a groove for the wires and the stock battery tray slides out to allow for the bigger battery

Just a heads up. The Lipo battery voltage cut off is high enough that you may find that a 5000mAh Lipo lays only a bit longer than a 2800 Nimh. I was disappointed when it felt like my 5200 mAh Lipo only lasted a bit longer than the stock battery. When I measured how much change it accepted after a few runs I saw it had quite a bit of remaining charge. The truck comes with a Nimh charger. You might consider getting a pair of Nimh batteries instead of Lipo if you are looking for easy.
