A friend lent me this a couple of months ago. I tried it out for playing MSFS and DCS. The fans are definitely loud, but now that my Legion 5 13700HX 4070 came in, I realize they are all loud.

The Legion system felt smoother all around if I'm being honest, but I'm not sure the m17 R5 I had was a final build.

It's a great price though, especially if you take into account the 4K screen.

Kind of tempting because with the 10% off email code, AMEX $120 off and 12% cb, it's coming in at around $1412 after tax. 6850m is a beast w/ 12GB VRAM and 32GB system memory included. Display is QHD with decent nits, 165hz. 97whr battery. Checks a lot of boxes.

BUT, if you are using this as a portable laptop, at 7.3lbs, it's not it. Size is also going to be an issue if using portably. Lastly, even though it has Ryzen 6000 series, which should support USB4, the m17 R5 doesn't appear to have a BIOS/FW update to enable that. ASUS G14 is the only one currently that I'm aware of, and that is still in beta even.

As a desktop? Well, I'd rather just build a desktop then.

I have an Alienware laptop that's probably 6 years old now, and I have replaced the motherboard under warranty 4 times already. I've replaced the battery twice, and Dell didn't cover it, but it's easy and cheap. I have not used it since the motherboard was last replaced, and plan on selling it. It's always been a great laptop, but I think the nVidia GPU in it would just shit the bed sometimes for no reason at all. I'm sure all of that has changed over time by now. I'm waiting for a good deal to come along before getting a new laptop.

I had read that the 6850 in the AA variants had some issue where the full power was not being given to the GPU, or something like that?

It was a big enough issue that people on Reddit advised against buying it but I never heard a follow-up to it.

Is the AA variant Legion 7 and this Dell clear from this issue now?
