When you can get a 6950 XT for $100 more this is a hard sell.

I dunno, I think they both have their merits. The 6950 XT gets ~10-20% more FPS in benchmarks and is 20% more expensive.

The increased power requirement on the 6950 XT is a tipping point for many though. I imagine a lot more people could get by without a power supply upgrade on the 6800 XT.

I'm not a fan of the chonky-ness of this MSI model, but otherwise an very happy with my Sapphire 6800 XT. If you have the funds and can power a 6950 XT, sure, go for it. Both are compelling options.

This is exactly why I ended up going with the 6800XT. The 6950XT power draw is so high that I would have needed a new PSU, so I decided to pass and save the $100-200 (at the time).

Even if somebody has to settle for the 6800 XT, it's still pretty dang fast and can do decent 4K. If somebody is still at 1080p or 1440p there wouldn't be much point in getting anything faster.

It would also be a good card to hold somebody over for a year or two until the really, really fast cards come down.

Another thing to consider is the VRAM. My 3080 only has 10GB, the 6800 XT has 16GB. AAA games now and upcoming use more VRAM.

In April 2021, I "won" a Newegg Shuffle for this card at the height of the GPU shortage/crypto boom.

If you think $500 and a free game is too high, I paid $1100 for this card PLUS was forced to buy some shitty no name 16gb ddr4 ram for $100, that I ended up flipping on eBay for $50.

Aside from that, it's been a really great card over the past two years. If you don't care about ray tracing, and if FSR was as widely adopted and as good as DLSS, I would say this would still be a better purchase over a 3080 or 4070.

How much more pull does it need from the psu?
I've read it's only about 20 watt difference.

I'd never have paid that much. But then again it was strange situation back then.

Yeah, for me, I had just purchased my first 4K120HZ OLED, and was irritated that I couldn't enjoy the benefit on my 1080ti. Most AAA games were hitting around 60fps and I was willing to pay the unfortunate price. Worked out fine in the end- in retrospect, if you break down the cost difference of now vs then, we're looking at about $600. Over two years, that's $300/yr. I've certainly got my individual perceived value of $300 per year, and likely to hang on to this card maybe another year or so.

I can't speak to how much each actually pull from the wall, but looking at some card specs, the Thermal Design Power (TDP) on the 6950 XT is 335W and for this 6800 XT it is 300W.

If we go by those numbers, it's a 35W difference.

PSU recommendations for the 6950XT are 850-900W vs. 750W for this guy which is a 100-150W difference.

I look at that and say I'd be comfortable with a 650-700W PSU for the 6800 XT but might struggle with the 6950 XT. It MIGHT be fine, but I personally wouldn't go into a build knowing I was on the ragged edge of power delivery. That extra 35W could be enough to cause problems at peak load - or it might be fine.
