Well, that is true and probably satisfies most people, for people using unRAID, you eventually run into having too many drives if you DON'T upgrade to the larger size as you are stuck with only 2x parity if bad shit happens.

And stop asking what I need that storage for. It was a very sad day when my boat capsized with all of my 4K BluRay movies and Linux distro aboard. Total loss... I need a hug.
goharddrive currently has 14tb WD and Toshiba for 109.99, they were 99.99 a few weeks ago which is probably the all time low.

The 14's from goharddrive have NOT had the SMART data reset so you actually know the number of hours of use and whether or not there are any SMART errors. When the SMART data has been reset like most of these from ServerPartDeals, you really know nothing about the drive. Fortunately, both places allow returns and I suspect there is no real difference between one vendor and the other.

edit, the WD are out of stock at goharddrive, Toshiba still available.
Good deal. Just got 4 drives from them a couple days ago and so far after testing 3 of them no errors at all

I've got two 6TB Seagate hard drives that are about 75% full of movies, TV shows etc. Now that prices are dropping, I've been considering trying out a RAID setup before one of my hard drives fail. The desktop they're installed into was for gaming a few years ago but now it's pretty much just movies and plex server to our Nvidia Shield.

Any advice where to start would be much appreciated.
Keep in mind that RAID is not a backup. If those are movies and shows you wouldn't be able to get again if a more drives failed than you have redundancy for thus you lose them all then you need to focus on backing them up off of your array first. The other thing to watch for is that when a drive in a RAID array does fail the rebuild process for the array puts a lot of stress on the drives, so you're more likely to see additional drives fail especially if they're the same make and model purchased at the same time. This would probably be a good drive to use to backup your current stuff in the now though. Throw it in an external drive enclosure or dock, do the backup, and place it somewhere safe like a friend or relative's house.

I run 2 unraid servers and 2 disk parity is fine . True nas is even better since its a real raid array . I run multiple recerts and have no had one die yet. Also run over 2.5 PiB on my racks and only had 2 die from bad shipping and or being complete written too within 24 hours of owning them.
These are enterprise drives and made for raid.
No one cares to have a complete backup anymore since all the data can be re-downloaded and raid with parity if used and setup correctly will never be an issue for 98% of users out there. No one here in slick deals cares what a backup is since most real business or users with small amounts of data use cloud storage.
This deal blows away any retail drive and if you buy multiple quantities one could run raid and save hundreds of dollars. Will be building a true nas server soon with 3 vdevs and 2 parity disks. 24 disks total. The odds of me losing more than 2 disks outs of a 8 disk vdev is slim to none .
The only way your statement is true is because someone did it wrong and or were inexperienced.

Buy a 24 bay supermicro 846 and a pcie 3.0 hba card . Buy a copy of unraid and run 2 disk parity . My plex server is over 230TB all remux discs.
I stream using a nvidia shield . OLED 65" C1 and atmos setup. Buy a consumer or enterprise mobo should give you 24 disks and 6 sata on the mobo with m.2. . No need to buy a gpu since a intel onboard video is enough to stream 4k remux. Also consider getting a UPS as anyone on here should realize this is the most common cause of data corruption or loss of a disk . Power surges , power outages etc. You want a graceful shutdown .

To share, I have 12 of these 16tb X18 drives which were purchased as new with their 5 year warranty. Great drive and I've experienced no issues. Good price if you don't mind the recert and only the 2 year warranty.
I bought 30qty of the x18 18TB and the x18 is the best for price and performance

X16 or lower are previous revisions and I do own a few 20TB X20 and these are amazing
As the Temps are alot lower which is what you want when running multiple disks.
I try to keep all my hdds 35 to 45c
Anything above 50c idle could cause a early death no matter what drive or brand you own.

I'd go for NVMe instead. disc drives are obsolete now.

maybe my thinking is faulty ...

once i get the drive, if the scan finds blocks/etc errors, i RMA the item and in return gets another refurbished drive.
if i don't scan the drive, and a year from now, the drive fails and i do a warranty replacement, i get another refurbished drive.

so what's the point of scanning the drive initially?
i can understand for a new drive, the RMA would/should be another new drive.
How important is your data? You scan it so you know the chances of it failing....if a drive has alot of bad blocks odds are much greater it's gonna have issues over one that has none or only 1 or 2. My nas does a smart short check daily and a long one weekly...I want to know ahead of time so I can order a replacement and have it on hand since the drive can be rebuilt from overlapping data on the other drives.

Anyone the difference between X18 and X16 's? . I accidentally placed the order for 4nos X16 16TB instead of X18 16TB . Yet to get them delivered.
I'm new to NAS and don't have much knowledge on these specifications.

If possible, I'd hook it up to a PC temporarily, download Seatools and run the short and then the looooong test and then put it in the NAS.
So to test it fully or long way it has to be hooked up to pc? And run seatools? This is to check bad sectors? I bought 4. How long will that take?

Dont know if it has to be a PC but Seatools didn't run on my NAS.
Long test, about a day. Run the short first, it is pretty quick, may discover a dud right there.
But run the long test after it within the free return shipping window.
I am now several month of usage into these SPD drvies and no issues at all.
