If you have the Chinese lantern fly infestation in your area (They arrived in the Northeast for me last Summer) then do not plant these. They have attacked and pretty much killed my maple tree that has been planted for over a decade now.

People don't understand that you need to take care of plants. Visit your local Costco this time of year and be amazed at the return line full of arborvitae simply because people aren't planting them. It's sort of depressing...

Just wait until Fall and grab a end of season sale at Lowe's for ~$30...better time to plan anyway.

Didn't even know they sold them, I've been very pleased with every plant I've bought at my local Costco so I would imagine these hold up to the same quality. A few neighbors have some Japanese Maples and I've always thought they've looked amazing... just not sure where I would put 2 without doing some major lawn work. Thanks for the heads up though, something to consider.

Dang you know what?! Now that you mention it, I've totally seen that at Costco actually, a lot of returns with dead arborvitae. Haha what in the heck do you they do? Think it'll survive in the bucket it comes in or they just don't get around to planting it?!

Sorry to hear that. Those lantern flies are a real nuisance. Didn't know they could destroy a 10 year old tree though. It is becoming an annual problem now, those pesky flies.

Don't sit back and take it. Time to go to war! Surely these something you can do to save that maple. Isn't there a type of insecticide that you can pour over the roots or introduce a predator?

Those are japanese beatle. They ate all the leaves of my tree one year leaving only the viens. But it was back to normal the next year.
