What Mr Greed said is correct. In fact, the same dude who started Fossil started Shinola.
I like some of their watches, but they don't hold their value.
Fun fact - back in the day Shinola was shoe shine - this dude bought the name and went an entirely different direction.

Assembled in China is an incorrect statement. They assemble watches at their Detroit factory from Swiss-derived movements and other imported parts.
I'm not a Shinola fan, but if you're going to trash on them for those qualifications, you better start dragging the majority of watches that carry Swiss Made on their dials as well.
They may be overpriced, but that is the world of fashion and luxury watches in general. I would never knock someone for buying what they like that in some way benefits American-based workers.

Completely false. I've toured their factory in Detroit & their watches are all made there, with Swiss movements. I own 5 of their watches & all high quality.

But you are correct
Their quality is iffy, can't really mess up quartz, but their automatic/mechanical I highly question.
For the friends wanting to try getting into watches, it's a brand that offers trendy styles at 'acceptable' prices.
If you are looking to get into luxury watches, this isn't it. With that said, I do like their style, wide range of materials and styles are cool.
