This isn't a bad bike, but it's no deal at $500. I would question if it is built correctly at the big box store. You could luck out and have a good build, or maybe not. For a bit more ($150), you can get a 1x12 setup and a much better overall experience from something like this:

The direct to consumer bike brands have outlets that resell bikes that have come back under their 30 day no-questions-asked policies. Usually pristine and you can save...

This person is trying to say that mechanical disk brakes (vs. hydraulic disk brakes) are inferior and that this bike isn't a deal at $499. I would also agree. Pacific Cycles used to make some decent stuff but it's been darn near 20 years since they have done so. I'd look at Polygon or Canyon or any number of online outfits prior to something like this.
You can save a little money with "online outfits", but then you need to buy a bike site unseen, guess on the sizing, assemble it yourself, be your own mechanic, and handle all warranty stuff.

This is true and I had issues with both my Canyon (needed major rear derailleur adjustment I couldn't do myself) and my kid's bike I just bought from Polygon (right brake reach hex bolt stripped out of the box, front wheel very out of true). The Canyon took 45 minutes of my time and was reimbursed the shop fee and the Polygon will send new parts and reimburse shop fees. I'm fine with both considering the $ saved.

I bought this model back in 2019.
At that time it was listed at $1000 and had all Shimano drive, hydraulic brakes and 29" tires/wheels.
It was on sale for $500 so I bought it
Its been a great bike for most part
I ride the bike mostly on roads and replaced the tires with Sefas Drifters (the flimsy tires it came with even smelled bad).
I had an Iron Horse with mech, disc brakes before the GT.
I like the hydraulics much better but the mechanicals were great too compared to clinchers.
Most of all I like the GT frame - well built/configured and worth upgrading.
I'm 6' and bought the "L" size because "XL" is for pretty tall people.
I dont consider this a bike to jump off boulders with.
People are broke with maxed credit cards so sellers are probably building this model down

$800 or even $500 for a bike with mechanical disc brakes, whereas the specialized or cannondale are way better deals... $800, lol....
While I agree that this doesn't seem like a great deal, the mechanical disc brakes don't really bother me at all. There are other issues of more significance.

- The fork travel is only 80mm. That in itself isn't all that bad, as you might expect that on a cross country or gravel bike, but then you look at the 68.5 degree head tube angle and realize this frame is more tailored towards mountain biking making the 80mm travel seem odd.

- I like Microshift. I even like old school 3x drivetrains okay, but a 7x3 at this price range seems under-specced.

If someone fits the Kent Trouvalle, I'd probably choose that over this:

There are even better bike deals posted above.

I purchased this bike from Public Lands website for $360 about 3 weeks ago. It was on sale for $399 and Public Lands had a 10% off coupon. Picked up the bike at Dicks but those clowns did a horrible job with assembly. I had to quickly learn how to make adjustments and alignments on youtube. It's been a good bike so far and has reintroduced me into trails and light mountain biking again. I say wait for it to go lower on the price.
