Not my review:

I liked it, But returned it
OK, to be fair I did read the reviews before ordering this and thought it would work for me despite the reported drawbacks. I was wrong and here's why. First of all let me say that this unit does work. I think it does the job it was designed to do fairly good. The problem is that it just absolutely eats battery power and you cannot get a decent size yard done with it. The unit comes with (2) two four amp hour batteries and one charger. Having said that, let me tell you my situation and why it didn't work for me. I have been a Ryobi guy for a long time. I have the 40 Volt lawn battery and equipment but I also have the 18 Volt handheld tool equipment. I have about (10) 18 Volt batteries of different sizes. All the reviews said that this unit uses up battery life pretty quick, but I figured since I had so many batteries I could avoid this problem and simply just keep rotating batteries. You can put batteries of different sizes in the unit so I started out with my big boy (9Ah) in position one and put a four amp hour battery in position two. I was able to get 10 minutes of work before the unit stopped working. I checked the four amp hour battery and it was completely depleted. The 9 amp hour battery had 3 bars. I put the four amp hour battery on a charger and took another 4 amp battery and placed it in position two again. I was able to get another 10 minutes of work done before the unit stopped. I checked and the four amp hour battery was completely depleted and the 9 amp hour battery had two bars. Once again I pulled out the four amp hour battery put it on the charger, and put a fresh 4 amp battery in slot 2. Once again I was able to get another 10 minutes of work. At this point I pulled both batteries out and put them both on the charger. I didn't want to completely deplete my 9 amp hour battery. To my dismay I found that the temperature protection circuit had flipped and the batteries would not charge. They were too hot. I had to put them in my little mini fridge in the shop to cool them down before they could charge. This is not a workable situation and why I did not give it more than two stars. I am a person that was fortunate enough to have more than two batteries to use on this dethatcher. Even then, I spent more time than I wanted switching out batteries. If you're just buying this unit and you don't have any 18 Volt batteries, it's not going to work well for you. The rapid charger will allow you to charge one battery in about 30 minutes. You need two batteries to make the unit run. So that means you're gonna have to spend at least an hour to get two fully charged batteries. At that point, if you're like me you're only going to get 10 minutes of run time. At that point you'll need to take the batteries and put them back on the charger, but as I said, it only charges one battery at a time and it takes 30 minutes. That means you're gonna get 10 minutes of work, charge for an hour and then work 10 minutes again. All the while hoping the batteries won't get so hot that the thermal protection kicks in and that they will indeed charge when you put them on the charger without requiring a cooling down time. (That was what I remember as a run on sentence) I don't understand why they don't allow us to have the 40 Volt unit in the United states. A lot of other lawn equipment that Ryobi makes in the United states is 40 Volt and it works great. I think that having a 40 Volt battery on this unit would make it a much better unit and I would certainly keep it at that point. They do make this unit as a 40 Volt unit in the EU. They call it a 36 Volt, but it's the same thing. For those of you who don't believe me, here's the link for it...https://www.ryobi.com.au/garden-t...l+Products and yes, if you test your 40 Volt batteries you'll see that they run anywhere from 36 to 40 volts so it is the same unit. If and when Ryobi ever decides to sell the 40 Volt dethatcher in the United states I will most definitely buy one because I do believe in their lawn tools and have loved everything that I have gotten, with the exception of this unit.
NOT an aerator even though it is marketed as one. It will not make holes into the ground and leave little dirt cores on the lawn like an aerator.

This looks interesting and cheaper than the Greenworks one. Would you get this if you had the Honda Fg110 dethatcher ?

I've been using one for a corner house yard. Love it. It might not be an aerator as people think but I like to think of it as poking little tiny holes with toothpicks. And the dethatching part fantastic. Picks up all the dead grass, the lawn mowing clippings, as well as the dog pooped at the neighbor leaves for me.

i got one of these for $450 when they first came out and love it--i use it on the front lawn and any nasty patches i have on the rest of the lawn-- when i want to do my whole 2 acres i change to my john deere pull behind (much more efficient for large areas) since i have a bucket load of 18v batteries i just take a few out when im ready and start mulching--never even noticed how long they last--much rather have this than a 40v that i have to buy new batteries for

Have this unit and used it quite a few times this season already. Does a great job if you know what to expect. It's not going to dig cores but it definitely aerates with the blades.

As for the battery life, I think it's pretty decent. I was able to do my 1/2 lot using just 4 batteries. This was with multiple passes too.

An unintended use, I've used the aerator blades to help me level old tree stump spots and my ditch line. It does a great job with doing light cultivating if you make multiple passes. This is really nice if you have some smaller hills you want to even out with the rest of your yard.

Highly recommend!

I've been eyeing this since it first came out but didn't pull the trigger since it was so expensive. I'll bite at this price point even if it's blemished or refurb.

Thanks

Yes out of the box it is a tiller. But I have never used it as one. I have the dethatcher add-on and only used it as a dethatcher.

I have a backyard that is somewhat "bumpy" - definitly noticable when I mow with a push mower. It is as if the grass is almost thicker/raised up in spots. My question is... will this work back there and maybe help even it out? Thanks!

These electric models aren't great for larger lawns, say above 1/4 ac.

On my previous lawn I had a tow behind that I'd use with my tractor - the usual tine dethatchers. They are cheap but suck. It's very hard to balance using the correct weight such that the dethatcher does a good job (or a job at all) with not becoming a tiller and tearing up the lawn needlessly. But I used it for over a decade. That lawn was over 1 ac mowable.

I moved about a year ago to a smaller place with more like 1/2 ac lawn. I never liked the performance of the tow behind so I sold it and bought an electric (plug in) Greenworks model, thinking it will suck, but I only have to do it once a year so it will be OK. The unit itself worked just fine, but managing the extension cords sucked and it took a long time due to the narrow width.

So this year I decided to sell the Greenworks and just rent a power rake from HD. It was $90 for the day, but I could have done the same area as the plug in model in perhaps 2 hours whereas the plug in would take 5 (I could have gotten a half day rental from HD for around $60 but didn't know how long it would take). Didn't even take a full tank of gas, is much faster and does a much better job. Too bad the gas versions are like $1000+ used.

Yes a dethatcher will tend to level these spots out over many runs. If the height is set properly and you have bumpy areas, there are portions where you'll scalp the lawn./
