It's like buying software utilities. I could say that I don't need it because I can do the work manually, but what does that really cost me? Time, effort, frustration (even utilities are not free from these issues, but...).

I'm not an expert but doesn't it just boil down to practice? Mental math is just automaticity. If you practice something enough times, it just sticks in your head, like learning a new language. Maybe this book teaches little tricks (teachers call them "strategies" or "methods"), but it still takes individual learners to practice the tricks so it moves into long-term memory. The real "secret" is discipline and grit to continually practice.
