Interesting. I'm the .01% that called FF8 my favorite of them all. It'll be interesting to listen to all of these. It'll be even more interesting to fight the urge to play it a 78th time while/after listening.
I loved the junctioning system, top 3 ff just the play through hasn't aged well
You can compare the track name of the file which lists the original title in parentheses
Example: 1-02 Clément Panchout feat. Facemelting Solos, Gamer of the Winds, SableProvidence - Aroma of Sugary Warmth (Balamb Garden)
and you can also see where the music played in the original game by looking here:
https://finalfantasy.fandom.com/w...Soundtrack

I'd say you're being pretty harsh in your judgement though. Although I haven't listened to prior FF8 tracks from OCremix my memory from the early days of that site is that the artists often had tendencies to slap a generic techno track on there, draw it out unnecessarily, then slip in a synth of the melody and call it a day. That's far from what we get here - although I've only gone through the first 10 tracks you get for example:
track 2: authentic sounding middle eastern instruments
track 3: authentic sounding Chinese instruments
track 5: authentic sounding jazz
track 8: nice Celtic sound

But I'll throw some others not from this album that might be more to your taste - they stick closely to the original compositions:
Balamb Garden acoustic guitar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JK994q3TZL8
Fisherman's Horizon acoustic guitar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uh0-bVl4MIQ
Fisherman's Horizon (from official cover album): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snbQAx7zh_c

Been listening and keeping tracks since college when OCR first came around. Saw this popping up on YT but didn't realize it was a massive album. 80 tracks is definitely their biggest release yet!

Okay my problem is how can you tell which track matches up to what? I have a few favorites I want to hear the remix for from this, but not by going through every freakin track.

edit: And now that I've listened to some... my god what cringe. older ocremix versions of the tracks from back in the day are so much better.

OCRemix is an amazing community. The FF7 album was fantastic, and the Seventh Saga cello album blew me away. So much talent!

80 tracks is a lot to go through. I've completed my listening of Disc 1 - below are the strongest ones I recommend:

1-02 Clément Panchout feat. Facemelting Solos, Gamer of the Winds, SableProvidence - Aroma of Sugary Warmth (Balamb Garden)
Middle Eastern
1-08 Ian Martyn - Gaofar (Breezy)
Celtic
1-14 ZackParrish feat. Ian Martyn, KestrelGirl, E. Jesús Chic Acevedo - Longing for the Horizon (Blue Fields)
Celtic

8 has always been my favorite. Followed by 9 and then 6 for my top 3. While 7 is a great game, I've never believed that it deserves the #1 spot it tends to get on lists.

FF8 is my favorite FF of all time but this album is disappointing, previously Ocremix' were much higher quality. FF7 Voices of the Lifestream is still my favorite one, all the tracks are quality and I would recommend that one if you like FF7 music.
