"higher compression and use thinner oil to achieve that." Well, that's complete BS. Tell us you know nothing about engines without telling us you know nothing about engines.

Modern engines lean towards meeting CAFE standards and use thinner and thinner oil to achieve that. Oil selection used to be wholly based on the engine itself, now it is based on what is good enough for the engine but based on overall efficiency and most MPG for the vehicle as a whole, basically, what is the thinnest oil we can possibly use and still get decent protection. Thinner oil is more efficient. Higher compression itself has nothing to do with needing thinner oil. Higher compression trend is also for increased efficiency. I would still use what your car manual suggests.
