Dang aps-c is deal breaker for me. Otherwise good price and good lens
This is a full frame lens. Not APS-C. It also works on APS-C, but is designed for full frame cameras.

Yes it is compatible with aps-c cameras, but it will just be cropped. I bought this for my a7c which is full frame.

Pretty sure there is only one gen of this lens.

B&H and others have this price now also.

You are correct. There is only 1 version of this lens not 2. And it is an FE (full frame) compatible lens. And it's really darn good for a superzoom. I use mine all the time now.

I have the Sony 24-105 f4, would it make sense to get this? Think this isn't as sharp in center and corners.

That's tough to answer. I have the 24-105 but also added this lens for a couple of reasons: it's very uncommon for me to use f/4-I'm mostly at f8 or 11-and I'm very often going beyond 105mm but rarely using 24mm. In fact, I'm planning to sell my 24-105 because it's isn't necessary for my way of working now. Overall, the 24-105 is the better for image quality but the Tamron is good and just fits me better.

f/2.8 is useful at the wide end for travel; ex: indoor shots at bars and restaurants. Extra zoom range doesn't hurt either.

The lens isn't very sharp and it has a lot of scope creep, but it's good enough and its surprisingly well-corrected for the price; not much fringing and the coatings work well.

If you don't need the f/2.8 at the wide end, and/or the extra range, stick with your Sony, esp if you value the extra 4mm at the wide end.

For students, Adorama is offering it for $629 ($20 educational discount).

I presume they have priced matched the $649 as well.

This pretty much never leaves my a7c. I think the picture quality is very good, focus is fast and quiet, zoom covers most situations. It's not small, but it is not terrible. I really don't put other lenses on. I'm a dad taking kids pictures though, not a professional.
