I have a hitch carrier and a Yakima Skybox 16 and have found no real world difference in fuel efficiency between the two. Sometimes I use the box, sometimes the hitch carrier, sometimes both. The mpg on our SUV never has a material change.

I find hitch carriers nice for things like ice chests and BBQs. Roof boxes better for tents, sleeping bags, luggage, etc. I do prefer the roof box but they each have their benefits.

found a thule pulse L cargo box 615 for 440 yesterday+ tax its back up in price on amazon it wont ship until mid June though. hope they dont cancel it. it is also directly from thule amazon
better than rei deals by 50-100 bucks unless rei lets us combine the coupons.

I've had my Thule Alpine XT for 4-5 years now. Have beat the crap out of it off-roading trails like Top of the World, White Rim Trail, sections of The Maze along with hundreds of miles of corrugated roads and forest service roads in UT, CO, ID. I have overloaded it plenty and it has not failed me yet. In winter I use it to haul my skis and snowboards and in summer all my camping gear. I use it year round and love the extra storage up top. It lives on my Land Cruiser and I can sneak into garages that are 8ft tall. The one thing I like about the Thule Alpine is that it's a bit taller than most long ski boxes but shorter than a full height box. It's more like a mid. I can't comment on the durability of Yakima but my Thule has been tough as nails. I highly recommend Thule.

Wearing sneakers you know fit well is usually the most comfortable option on short hikes. Hiking shoes are very subjective based on your bodies needs and the conditions you are hiking in.
I personally like altra lone peaks and Merrell Moabs...the Moabs aren't very durable but often found on sale.

Think I would need to take off the Alpine or Motion XL if I had to park in those cruise terminal parking garages? Think it has enough clearance or need to take it off after unloading guests and luggage at passenger dropoff?

Also which is better the Thule Force or Motion? I recalled one of them has a tricky locking mechanism and avoid and recommend the other bit don't know which one
