You can keep holding the line but I just don't see this as helpful. I finally bit in December on my PC rig. That was after waiting 6 months. "Just watch the prices drop Etherium drops proof of work. Then it was wait until the new 4xxx cards drop from NVIDIA. Then it was until the new AMD cards become available. And even then we had the "watch the news for unemployment and inflation".
All in all, prices have stayed relatively flat. My entire PC would cost almost exactly the same of what I paid for it 6 months ago. Prices haven't dropped any more than one would expect them to drop in normal times over the past 6 months.
Trying to catch the bottom of the market is a fool's errand for most. If you could really predict the dip and the peak you wouldn't worry about prices on a last gen mid-tier video card. You'd be too busy counting your billions.

Just as a quick proxy, I checked the prices of SD posts on 6950 XT 6 months ago and they were $750-800. Today SD posts on the 6950 XT are $600. That's a pretty big decline in 6 months, but perhaps is just the normal price drops on graphics cards, as what's "state of the art" changes pretty quickly.
I think you're right that it's silly to wait forever, especially if you really need a new GPU, but I think it's also evident that prices were pretty inflated in the last few years and that prices are coming back down. There's been lots of more formal and data driven discussion on the various tech news/blog sites, talking about how Nvidia cards, for example, have gone from selling way above MSRP to slightly below MSRP.
I picked up 6900xt from offerup for $450. My first Radeon card, initial driver install was rough, but after fingering out all the kinks, runs smooth with no issues at all.
If you don't mind picking up some things used, you can build a 4K capable PC for around $1,200

You are correct that the higher-end cards have seen more aggressive price cutting. On this specific card, the 6800XT was available on 11/29/2022 for $520. It was that price or lower at least once a month since March of this year. I've been watching it as I want to grab one to upgrade my 6700XT.
That said, prices will continue to drop. I played the waiting game all last summer and fall before deciding to make the plunge. And all that waiting saved me maybe $50 over a 6 month period. And if I had followed the "hold the line" advice and bought my same rig today it might be a whole whopping $20-30 less expensive for waiting an additional 5 months. Basically, over the course of an entire year my gaming PC has dropped in price $100. That was hardly the epic collapse that virtually every SD predicted last spring/summer.

Hold the line....the real price drops are coming sooner than later.
