You can just get a Minisforum mini PC for $579 (now $506 - see below). Comes with the latest AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS, 32GB DDR5, 1TB NVMe 4.0 SSD, Triple 4K display out, a ton of USB ports, including a USB4 port. It even comes with a Windows 11 Pro license.

Unless you really need a Mac, I'd go with the above. Much better machine for almost the same price. You can the same specs from other manufacturers for even less, but Minisforum is a well known brand in the mini PC scene.

Edit: As another user kindly pointed out, the Minisforum PC I listed above is just $506 with coupon now. absolutely insane deal for so much power in such a small package.

Seriously considering buying one to tinker around with but I have no idea what else I would use it for.

8GB RAM is not a lot and online reviews suggest the 256GB storage is much slower than the 512GB.

This configuration works great for a basic browsing and word/pp/excel processing setup.

If you plan on do heavy video editing, gaming, or other RAM-heavy applications, this IS NOT the target configuration for your needs.

Too bad Macs are designed not be to upgraded or repaired. Something like this would work well for my wife if I could quadruple the RAM and quadruple the storage for $100-200.

RAM is Random Access Memory. It's essentially the working area for the CPU to do its thing. the 256GB SSD is the storage. With 8GB RAM, you could have issues with large spreadsheets or ones containing a lot of macro functions. Photoshop could lag when using effects.

I know it. I tried to move my wife off Mac a while ago and she just won't have it. All she does is Adobe programs and web-surfing, but she doesn't want to give up her Apple key shortcuts or learn a new OS, even if it would save $1000 on her next computer.

Yeah, I have family members who have switched to macs and iPhones after using Android and Windows PCs, and they don't want to leave Apple's ecosystem now. I get it, but it's just not for me. Hardcore Android and PC for life. Haha. I just can't tolerate the thought of paying such huge amounts to go from 256GB to 512GB/1TB SSDs in this day and age when you can buy a fast 2TB NVMe drives for $1000. Can't do apple for this reason alone.
