Yeah not bad $170 for a $1.50 part. You are better putting in a thunderbolt SSD, way more value. The average user wont notice the difference anyways and that is why Apple cut corners.

Base model for $500 is a good deal. This is not. You can add external storage to a Mini relatively cleanly but you cannot overcome that 8GB RAM so extra $$$ for a tiny bit more storage is a bad deal.

Sunch an advanced microprocessor adn then Apple handicaps it with 8GB of RAM in 2023 and make it impossible to upgrade.

good comment. years ago i started out with mac in the graphics industry but no longer use them.

please clue me in on why these are so popular, if a Mac isn't up-gradable then why the appeal of them?

could it be that the apple OS is so superior to windows that i have missed something? also if i was going to spend this kind of money i certainly would want to have the ability to upgrade ram and the SSD, that should be a given.

when i repair computers the basics will always be upgrade Ram and upgrade the SSD, perhaps others have no concern for this and when the Ram or SSD dies the mac just gets thrown out? Shocking

I'm using my 2012 Mac mini as home server and it's fine and probably I may buy something else if it dies. (It was my main PC when I bought in 2012.)
How long have you kept your PC? 20 years? Only ram and HDD upgrade without changing CPU and MB in that period?
If that's your main goal, this one won't fit your use case.
Usually these machines are ok to use ~5 years without upgrade and if the parts die, then replace mainboard altogether (CPU/RAM/SSD soldered on MB) or buy new one.
In cost or environment perspective, not much different what current PC industry does beside Apple. No manufacturers would keep the repair parts over 10 years and Intel /AMD makes MB incompatible with new CPU/RAM. So almost same cost (CPU+MB+RAM+SSD) every 5-7 years if you try to match your PC in decent performance.

I get them since they are completely silent machines, which I need for my use case.

at one time i was tempted to buy the 2012 Mac mini as it was the last mini with upgrade able Ram and HDD. there are still some 2012 Macs sold used so that option is still open.

Unified memory is extremely fast for most use cases.
