I got the 4 because I have two cats and I wanted to be able to tell difference between both cats when they poop. It weighs them which is very nice as my kittens are growing and I can adjust their food intake accordingly. My cats are also large so the bigger opening and size is nice. It also has a front usb for camera mount which I use to monitor their poops for vet visits. Aesthetically it's also more pleasing.
If you don't care for either of those things then 3 connect reconditioned probably better. Regular 3 has no Wi-Fi app which I think is the real benefit so I would at least get the connect. Hope this helps.
