Is this any better for anything versus a 7000mb gen 4 nvme?

Optane disks are not meant to be used as a storage device. They are designed to be used with Intel's Rapid Storage Technology (RST) as cache to help speed up slower disks. They were often paired with slower spinning disks but can be used with a solid-state disk.

These things are fast as can be. The only downside is capacity. It's too bad that the technology is essentially dead at this point. Check out some benchmarks or reviews to see how quick game load times were with optane drives.

Eh. I don't really see a value in this over a fast gen 4 nvme.

The 3D XPoint-based Optane has much higher endurance rating, lower access latency, faster low queue depth (QD1) read and write, but slower sequential read and write compared to NAND-based flash storage.

These are still vastly superior for things like ZFS ZIL / SLOG or the transcode drive for a Plex/Emby/Jellyfin server.

While NVMe gen 5 and 4 drives have gotten faster in a lot of metrics, compare this drive's IOPS at queue depth 1 (410K read, 243K write) vs the Samsung 990 Pro which is currently the best gen4 drive available (22K read, 80K write)

Thank you for the incredible response. I think most people do not even know what that means. For daily use, or as a boot drive, is this better than a 1tb fast gen 4 NVME? I personally don't see the value. It seems like this is a fairly niche product and if you need it, you'll know you need it. It doesn't seem like a good value for someone looking for basic storage additions.

For daily use as a boot drive or basic storage, this is inferior to even high end gen 3 NVMe drives.

It's a specialty product, basically should only be used in situations where it kind of straddles between RAM and traditional storage. Situations where tons of small files are bring written and deleted, the better durability and faster random access result in noticeable improvements for these specific use cases.

I just wanted to point out that there still ARE use cases where this is still superior to normal NVMe drives despite being older and appearing to have worse specifications in terms of sequential reads/writes.

Gotcha! Again, I appreciate the detailed response. I was not fully aware of how the technology works. I guess for a general nvme drive, maybe the Intel 670p would be okay. Do you think that one is okay for basic file storage?

The Intel 670p is QLC so it's endurance isn't going to be as great as higher end drives, but for the current price point I believe it's the best option you can go with. The recent price drops on them caused me to buy literally a dozen of the 2TB models recently and I'd previously purchased a few of the 512GB and 1TB models for other systems previously. It's definitely got a solid reputation for a gen 3 drive.

The 670p is just cheap low endurance nand flash. This 118gb optane drive was intended for industrial applications where reliably is more important. Intel couldn't get high yields for optane. Which essentially killed it. If you spend the cash on a p5810x 400g or 800g. The random i/o will be significantly better than many alternatives and has higher density than making a ram cache drive. The issue is all p5800x derivatives are very very expensive. In the thousands of dollars. I wish Intel would keep this technology alive. 😞 They sold the optane tech to micron (which also doesn't want to make optane hardware). And then the lower end nand flash tech to solidgm.
