Huge and expensive, yes, but looks to be the best price anywhere from Amazon in UK w/ free shipping. Even that Misterworker site and Grooves.land both want considerably more than Amazon. I'm tempted to pull the trigger on this - kinda like buying one of those giant coffee table books... only this is the tool version of a giant coffee table book. Can't imagine I'd find too many uses for it, so I'm going to try to resist purchasing. Posting it if anyone else is interested at this price.

I have bought the three pack set (7 inch, 10 inch, 12 inch) and two pairs of the Comfort Grip (7 inch). The Comfort Grip are 100% worth the price difference over the regular dipped handles.

Having said that, I still don't use any of them enough as I planned to. They work great, I just don't find enough applications as I thought I would have, and that's with me being a residential service plumber.

I bought a pair of the Icon pliers wrench (Knipex clone) at Harbor Freight, expecting I would fall in love with them as they get so much praise on the internet. Surprisingly, I was disappointed to find that I just couldn't find any uses where the pliers wrench was better than any other tools I already had. I returned them to the store.

Can anyone comment on some good applications for this tool?

I feel you. If you have a lot of tools specialized for the job use that tool. Ie. if I have a 15mm nut to loosen and I have a 15mm ratcheting wrench, I'm using that 15mm ratcheting wrench over a pliers wrench assuming I have clearance. This tool is great for edc though. I don't need to carry a big set of tools around or hunt for that specific wrench and I can live with the inefficiency sometimes. The pliers part is pretty good. I've used it to bend and straighten thin metal sheets and latches . A pliers wrench at this size probably wouldn't be good for edc but I do sure want it just cause. ...

My first pair of these was also the Icon version, which is frequently too big for the job, so I bought the 7-inch Knipex. I find the smaller version to work well when trying to tighten or loosen traditional copper plumbing fittings in a tight space, where one nut has to be held while the other is turned. Once these are adjusted to the right size, I can simply loosen my grip to rotate the wrench to the next set of flats and then squeeze to rotate the fitting again. I used the same method to replace a regulator on a gas grill where the fitting was close to the side table, limiting rotation. An open-ended wrench would have done the job, but not as quickly, and I didn't have to guess what size the fitting was to find the right wrench.

Like splendidcrown8598, I use mine to flatten metal parts and shape brackets. The parallel jaw action occasionally makes them useful for pressing in small parts. I use them a surprising amount where other pliers would lack the finesse.

I've used the 5 and 7" extensively for adjusting object mounts for models and museum objects. They're also the best tool to fix a bent hook on a dropped measuring tape.

I rarely carry a socket set in the field. This can manage the occasional outside hex I encounter.

I can't comment on this particular wrench, but a long time ago I bought some giant Craftsman plier wrenches specifically to remove the giant plastic lock nut that Volkswagen used to the fuel pump assembly in the tank. I think other companies use a similar system. That said at the time (and it was probably close to 25 years ago) I recall griping about the outrageously high price (which I think was around $30).

I do wonder if there is a benefit to this vs spending $20 more for the 22" Knipex.

Exactly this. If you are working out of a shop, garage, or home, you probably don't need a pliers-wrench as you can just grab the appropriately sized socket or combination wrench to get the job done.

But if you're working out in the field, these pliers-wrenches can often take the place of a socket set or wrench set and work much better than an adjustable wrench or, depending on the job, a set of slip-joints. I came to love them when working on a commercial roof top air conditioner, where all the tools I needed fit in a nice compact bag that was easy to climb the ladders with.

22 inch? These 16's are the biggest daddy pliers wrench Knipex makes - as far as I'm aware, at least. Do you have a link to the ones you're referencing for $20 more?

Okay, yeah, I was thinking that may be the case but he wasn't clear. Also, pliers wrenches and Cobras are both pliers but far from similar… so, would somebody that wanted to spend over $100 for the 16 in XL pliers wrench consider even larger Cobras, instead? Idk, it's an interesting question, tho…

Is there a larger size Cobra than the 400's? 400mm = 15.7inches.

Maybe he is referring to 83 61 020 Pipe Wrench S-Type with Rapid Adjustment 2" that is 22.05 inches:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V3B6UCM

Edited for Not recommending these:

I put the link so you could see what they are, I don't recommend them because they are almost twice as heavy as the cobra 400 and they have less jaw capacity. If you need something this size get the Cobra 400 or a similar sized Aluminum pipe wrench.

If you want a massive Knipex tool for shtis and giggles, get the 22" Cobra. It's formidable. And handy, if you need to adjust the Earth's axis.

nvm already mentioned
