If you can get the non-windowed version cheaper, do that. After a few smokes the window will get very dirty and is not easy to clean. That being said, a masterbuilt 30" electric smoker was my intro into the smoking world. I've long since moved on, but if you want to see if it's for you, this is a good entry smoker. For anyone interested my smoker of choice went from masterbuilt 30 to a weaver Smokey mountain to a large big green egg and also a big Joe kamado Joe.

Yeah, the door is entirely useless if you don't want to spend far too much time cleaning it. I just don't and am fine with that.

I love this smoker for the simplicity, set the temp, add chips about once an hour and that's all you have to do. For me, I don't want smoking meat to be a hobby or a lot of work, I just want smoked meat. This smoker is great for that!

Yep, I do most of my smoking on a kamado style and barrel style, but when I don't have time wait for it to come up to temp or to babysit it, the electric is a nice option. Using the electric does feel like cheating, but it gets you what you want easily. Some days are made for 10 hour brisket cooks sitting next to the smoker all day. Other times you've got stuff to do and don't have time for that. I find the electric is also nice during the off-season when it's colder out.

I almost got one of these from Cabela's on sale for around $230, glad I didn't! I will get this one though from a coworker he almost mentioned if you can get it cheaper, get the one without the window. I personally won't care

Well, you also would have trouble producing the same quality of smoke flavor from a masterbuilt like this as you would from a Kamado, which can get closer to an offset flavor profile. I know that but still do all of my smoking on a pellet grill, which also struggles to put on a ton of smoke flavor. I just value not having to tend the smoker, and controlling from my phone a lot more than the extra flavor at this point.

I have considered a Kamado with a WiFi connected blower, but the Joe's get pretty pricey.

Are these electric smokers better than coal/wood burning smokers? My wife said she wanted to get a smoker yesterday and was looking at coal burning smokers, but now I'm wondering if an electric would be safer, more economical, and superior.

Is this something you can leave out year round without having to worry about damage from the elements?

People do it (with a cover) but generally the units fail very quickly that way. Masterbuilt isn't exactly known for high quality, weather resistant products, so you'll need to baby it if you want it to last. Even then, it may still fail fairly quickly. Their low QC standards and very short warranties make it difficult to be confident in their products, unfortunately. If it does fail, it'll probably be the controller, at which point you'd be left upgrading to a better controller for nearly the cost you paid for the entire smoker, or trying to find a used controller that someone is selling. If you go the route of the upgraded controller, you'll wind up with quite a good setup actually, but you should look into those ahead of time, because it'll help you plan a bit.

For the record, this isn't new information. There are entire very lengthy forums dedicated to these particular smokers, and the information I'm mentioning is well accepted there. They obviously still love the units, but most recognize that buying one if these is basically a commitment to upgrading the controller in a year or three.
