VAIO, not Sony anymore, looks to be a step up from Gateway.

I'd rock this if I needed it.

Edit: This is the cheaper line of VAIO laptops. They offer more premium versions… for more money.

VAIO became a separte company from Sony long back, in 2014 but iit retained most of the Sony's laptop devision engineers and they normaly make costly products. This specific series you see, is a special low cost edition tailored for the Asian Countries like India, China where there is a huge demand for budget laptops and VAIO dids not want to be left in that race.

In USA, for marketing these FE series laptops, they signed a deal with Walmart and made them Walmart exclusive. You may be right that they are basically using some generic Chassis (14.1" Display is one indicator which you only see this OEM laptops branded by different Companies like Gateway) but optimizing them using their Firmware, Software and some external components too, like the Keyboard and trackpad which looks similar to the premium VAIO laptops, a signature design.

I remember a Sony VAIO desktop I had from '97 that came running Win 95. It had 2 Iomega 100mb Zip disk slots and even one or two USB ports that I never had occasion to use (I don't think I owned a usb drive until 2004). Since the internet was still in its infancy, it was accompanied by a fairly large selection of cd-roms, including stuff like an All-Music catalogue, the Encyclopedia Brittanica and Microsoft Works (anyone remember Microsoft Works?! - I always had that and everyone else would have Microsoft Office). That was a sweet machine! Felt like encountering the future. It was like a piece of art. Beautiful.
