I'm not even sure I've ever come across the need to abandon a drill for an impact driver for drilling holes. I've used impact driver for sinking lag bolts into wood, or loosening lug nuts.

Is this even a thing, or is this just for the quick connect-lock hex base of the drill bit into an impact?

They are nice when working on a ladder to put in screw hooks for example. You only need to carry 1 tool up with you.
