It's good price for CPU but the optane will run circles around even 850x or 990 pro nvme in practically all real world situations, from games to files transfers and more.

Of course in human time, wouldn't be worth the original price, but at this price, sure

I've got a 900P 280GB u.2 that I've had for 3+ years, its a great OS drive and on an M.2 to U.2 cable. The AIC cards are awesome, but on most modern PC's you only have one CPU attached 16x slot, there are another 4x lanes for an M.2 card but that's it. So you'll end up with the AIC on a chipset slot, which might not be optimal for an OS drive.

To use this AIC on the cpu attached M.2 slot, you need one of these adapters which are known to be highly unreliable, and you have to make your own custom mounting bracket to secure it.

12900k is worth the $350 alone, the Optane 900p around $150--as it has extremely good endurance and random read speeds (99% of what a normal person does, gaming, opening apps, moving small files).

You could very very easily buy this and flip the Optane drive for $150 on ebay all day any day. Giving you the 12900k for essentially $200.

Low key one of the best CPU deals.

Unless you're not building an ATX system, otherwise for sure.

Then again, there's only one PCI-e slot on an mini-ITX mobo

Not a problem for any of the recent CPUs with 24+4 or 20+8 PCIe 4.0 lanes because this is PCIe 3.0. You won't saturate the roughly 64Gb/s worth of chipset lanes with this 32Gb/s drive even if you're writing to a few chipset-connected 6Gb/s USB 3.2 and SATA drives at the same time.

Basically that's Ryzen 5000/B550 or better or Intel 11th gen or better. If you have anything older... well you probably don't have a workload where you'd even be able to measure a performance improvement with this drive, lol. And if you do, well, you just bought a 12900k with this Smilie

Thank you for the info.

Do you happen to know if CPU-connected PCIe slots on Z690 support Optane? I wasn't able to find anything about this online. The reason I ask is, my motherboard (MSI MEG Z690 ACE) has one CPU M.2 slot, which doesn't support Optane; only the chipset M.2 slots support Optane, so wondering if the same might be true of PCIe. The motherboard does otherwise have one x16 and one x8 PCIe slot.

Would using Optane with chipset lanes make it not worth it compared to, say, a 980 pro on CPU M.2?

Missed your post when writing mine above (answers my second question).

How about latency through the chipset, though? Would the random R/W make up for any latency hit and still outperform a 980 pro as an OS drive?

Thanks.

Great link from Toms which includes optane in their benchmarking. It's a very impressive drive, moreso that's is from 2017. In a nutshell, this drives technology was trying to sit between DRAM and NVME.

Intel was up to something great, but suppose they just couldn't get prices down.

Nevertheless, promising for future tech development, and all this talk about gen 5 is inconsequential today.

Eventually we will see ssd behave like RAM instead of traditional NVME. Not suggesting anyone wait! It will move a MANY years
