$6 isn't enough. I'm going to swap over to pennzoil. They still have their $10 dollar rebate and the price at Walmart is cheaper than Mobil 1

Because many rebates don't end up getting claimed or used which means some people accidentally pay full price when they intended to get the rebate.

Mobil gave me the worst rebate experience ever. Once I finally got my rebate, it was expired, and they said they couldn't do anything about it.
Agree, never received mine last time.

Last week I bought 2 - 10 qt packs of 5W-30 (ie 2 - 5qt jugs per carton). After $6 instant rebate it came out to $60 total. That's $15 per jug of full synthetic.

M1 at Walmart is close to $30/5qt. jug.

.
Sorry lost in your math!
5qt cost $30 right at Costco - because you bought 10qts for $60

Same price as Walamrt then?

Have been using M1 0W-40 for years because it is usually the cheapest (after rebate) VW 502.00 approved oil that I can easily find.

Rebate experience has been good. They switched to electronic check a few years ago. However, the rebate amount keeps shrinking, It was $12, then $10, and now it is $6. The price keeps going up. Now the rollback price at Walmart is $26.97 which is $4 more than the old rollback price.

Another oil I have used is Castrol EDGE Euro 0W-40. I got it for $24.47 back in Sept 2021, and there was a $10 rebate. Now it is $28.94. I'll probably wait a bit to see if they do rebate again.

Can someone please explain to me the logic behind why companies still doing rebate instead of straight up discount?
Because most people don't file the rebates.

My mistake, I bought 20 total qts for $60. (2 cases of 2ea 5 qt jugs). That's $15 per 5 qt jug.

Sorry.

You don't understand anything about oil and how it protects an engine. The synthetic oil is a must but the amount of oil required is the most important not interval changes at 5k or 10k or 15k. If you want to know the exact number, you would have to send it to a lab and test it.

I change it at 5k just because I would do tire rotation at the same time but I know for 100% sure it can go to 10k with ease because I already sent it into a lab to check at 10k and it was still good.

Now what do you get from my comment? The amount of oil level is the MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR, second factor is being synthetic but nowadays they're more than likely all synthetic.
You're 100% correct. Check oil level. I've been asking for YEARS for someone to show my changing oil at 5k is better for your engine. I'm still waiting for any proof at all.

Why people think auto manufacturers want you to destroy their engines is beyond me.

The manufacturer DOESN'T PAY FOR THE OIL so why wouldn't they error on the safe side.

Your local mechanic or oil change place makes MONEY on early changes.

Do people really think they know more than these BILLION dollar manufacturers who have the BEST TESTING EQUIPMENT IN THE WORLD.

Bobistheoilguy is the most reputable, autistic forum out for oil knowledge and holds pennzoil in high regards.
alright dude im a millenial and use a systemd-less linux distro so there goes your theory about me being a normie. you're demonstrably wrong. how does it feel being so wrong?

That's just a myth. Just like changing syn oil at 5k will make your car last longer . It's great for the people making money for doing the oil changes but has no proof that it makes your engine last longer.

Do what makes you feel the best.
I change my oil 4-6k depending on use. I do it myself. It costs $20 and like 10 minutes. Enjoy your oil consumption issues because you wanted to save 5 dollars.

Let me ask you a simple question?

How many Millions of cars are sold every year? How many manufacturers say no problem with 10k oil changes?

So by your logic I should see at least hundreds of thousands of bad engines in the junk yard. I also should see just as many lawsuits from customers who were lied to by those manufacturers.

Yet I see NONE. Maybe you can list a few .

Look do what you want it's your money. Can I assume you also change all fluids at half the recommended intervals. Obviously they must be lying about those also.

Absolutely disagree. Local mechanics make more money if your engine breaks because you don't change your oil as frequently as you should. Also, car manufacturers have incentives to promote oil changing practice that makes your old car breaks so they can sell you a new car.

I am running M1 5W-40 in my Honda. It is another excellent Euro oil. I don't really care about rebates. My summer oil will always be A3/B4 specs.
