I don't see how this is a deal. This is a low end DRAM-less drive. You can find comparable drives from other brands in the $35-40 range.

Huh, I never knew SanDisk actually make full-blown SSDs too. Kinda obvious, but I never actually thought of it. Are they any good?
SanDisk has been making SSDs for well over a decade. Some are good, some aren't.

I tried one of these when they were released, flat out one of the slowest ssds out there. Booting actually took longer than a decent one and virus scanning took twice as long.

I have the 2tb version of this drive. Worst drive I've ever purchased. Slow slow slow slow slow as fark. Pretty sure a 1tb microsd card is faster than this.

Dumb question from a newbie so please be kind...How do you know if a SSD drive has DRAM ... Where in the spec's do you look? Thanks

Bulk write performance is dismal: https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc...rformance/ . It is worse than slow -- it is so inconsistent as if it is defective, something you don't see in even low-tier brand SSDs.

If you're looking at putting on of these in a PS4, I've heard the Ultra 3D NAND version is superior as it can actually boost graphic output. Only about $9 more.

Not a dumb question. It's an unsolved mystery

On the SATA side it's pretty easy. To my knowledge. these are the only noteworthy drives that may be currently available with DRAM:

1. Samsung 870 EVO - Ideal amount of DRAM at all capacities (1GB DRAM per 1TB NAND). This drive has historically had reliability issues.

2. Samsung 870 QVO - I'm not sure if this drive still has the ideal amount of DRAM at the higher capacities but all models do have some DRAM. The QVO line uses QLC NAND and is significantly inferior to the EVO line's TLC NAND.

3. Crucial MX500 - Modern versions have 512MB DRAM at all capacities, which is less than ideal at 1TB+. This is currently the SATA drive I'm most inclined to recommend.

4. ("Previous generation") WD Blue 3D / SanDisk Ultra 3D - Has DRAM but not sure of amount. The "new generation" WD Blue SA510 does NOT have DRAM and seems to be overpriced garbage.

5. There's an SK Hynix drive that isn't very common but I think has DRAM.

Most other modern SATA drives are DRAM-less. Some companies (including ADATA and Silicon Power) falsely advertise some models as having DRAM, even though they don't (at least not what most people would consider DRAM). Double dishonorable mention for Silicon Power advertising QLC drives as TLC.

There are some popular databases/spreadsheets with SSD info. Much of the info is out of date because companies are constantly changing components but not model numbers. I've bought 4 cheap SATA SSDs in the last year and not one of them came with the components listed in those resources.

That thread is two years old. It's quite possible that a drive bought today will have different components. Note, I didn't say better components.

Do not buy dramless SATA, this one especially is achingly slow. Takes over 1 min to boot windows. Cloned it to a nvme dramless and an mx500 sata, both those took under 10 seconds. It just takes 10x long to find data because the lookup tables are not cached. Also this is one of the slowest bidget ssds out there, it took the longest to do normal things like scan viruses ect.

I bought this without reading the comments on it. It is slow and the price just took another dump down $2. This is not a slickdeal for the general consensus of prices for dram-less cache ssd's.

"Although due to the lack of DRAM cache and the slower write speeds we would not recommend using the Sandisk SSD Plus as your primary OS drive, it can still be a handy drive to have in the system to dump some games on and enjoy faster loading times without completely breaking the bank."

5. Sandisk SSD Plus
Best Storage DRAM-less SATA SSD
Pros
  • Lots of Capacity Options
  • Good Read Speeds
Cons
  • 2D NAND
  • Relatively Lower Write Speeds
  • Marginally Higher Price

This drive is not even a 3D NAND drive! It only has 2D NAND! The price is not worth buying. A drive with DRAM Cache TLC and 3D NAND is only $6 more!
I wish I did not buy this drive! Now I can't return it!
