The norm on little kids bikes has always been a coaster brake in the back hub, which this bike has. The front brake is a largely unnecessary bonus, but it will get them somewhat used to hand brakes for when they get a bigger bike that doesn't have the rear coaster brake.

So for kids bikes a coaster brake is actually required by law.

It's actually based on seat height, but generally speaking, a 16" wheeled bike is usually required to have a coaster brake while all but the smallest frame 20" wheel bikes aren't. 18" is an odd in-between size, but I'd guess they're required on a bike as small as this Segway.

Solid bike. My grandson love it! Because it is solid, it is a little heavier (not significantly) than most toddler bikes. IMHO, even if it is heavier, he gets more exercise.
