SEER is about the efficiency of its capability, not the capability itself (which is measured by the BTUs).

Additionally, heat pumps are best for warmer climes by definition.

And for the curious: 12k btu = 1 ton.
just installed three over the weekend

you can rent the vacuum pump and manifold gauge from Autozone with a $100 deposit on each
Be prepared to pay 5K.

Low 16.5 SEER according to Amazon. Not great for heating in colder temps.

I read a review on Amazon claiming the printed circuit board is made to fail. Personally, I'm going to pass and wait (and pay more) for a sale on another Pioneer mini split.

Smaller units are always lower effects than the larger units.

We have a 400 Sq Ft vaulted ceiling living room with open concept to the dining/kitchen. Dining/kitchen are just under 550 Sq Ft. About 500 Sq Ft. loft type bedroom over DR/Kit and a full basement.

Fairly well insulated home but does have a lot of windows that catch the western sunshine. We're in central Minnesota which will get in the 90s in the summer.

Any recommendations besides central air? What other info do you need?

This is also not true. With some carrier infinity, for example, SEER slightly decreases with the larger units (like 5 ton).

Honest answer? Call a local licensed installer rather than asking Joe Random SDer.

By the math 2 (3 if you want the basement) of these. One in each level. Cheaper than central, no ducts are required and you can cool areas independently.
