Amazon (via Woot) is selling PowerBlock Sport 24 Adjustable Dumbbells for $99. These aren't often on sale and the full price is $199. It looks like it might be an older model (older design) but there appears to be no difference in function.

Each dumbell only goes up to 24 lbs.

Great gift for your great-grandma, I guess?

I've always wanted on of these while thinking they were gimicky and wondering if they were worth it.

Not gimmicky at all. Many people use PowerBlocks for their home gyms if space is tight or ease of having a full set of dummbells into one.

The only issue with these particular ones is they only go to 24 lbs, so the audience and use is limited. However, a set like these are PERFECT for my wife (who does mainly cardio and just a bit of strength)

Seconding this comment. I love my Elite set, 5-50lbs (starting) which I expanded to 90 lbs. Also purchased a Powerblock stand. I live in a 2bd apartment with my wife and our spare room doubles as my office, wardrobe, storage and gym lol. Needless to say, these have been perfect for our situation and will translate very easily to a dedicated homegym whenever we buy a home. Had them for ~6 years and have never had a complaint.

Only real cons I've experienced:
  • Not good for supersets/switching back and forth between weights. It can be done, but it's clunky.
  • Difficult to imitate kettlebell-type movements due to the dumbbell "hand cage". It can be done, but becomes more difficult as you go up in weight.
  • Difficult to use wrist wraps due to the dumbbell "hand cage". Obviously not an issue with the Sport 24 model.

In for 1 for sure!
