Can someone who knows these things explain why one is 3x the price of the other if they're both 10x42? That part is all I know. Thanks.

The clarity of the glass is probably the biggest thing. Others who know more can elaborate

Optics quality is far superior on the Viper. Crossfire is their entry level line…at least on their scopes it is.

As others have said, the difference is the quality of the optics. But it goes way beyond the quality of the glass and includes the quality of the lens coatings. The glass covers overall clarity, while the coatings govern brightness. Bare lenses want to reflect a percentage of the light hitting them (there are a few lenses in binocs) reducing brightness. The coatings reduce those reflections letting more light reach your eye. The better the lens coatings the more light that reaches you. I've tried both and own older Vipers. Note that 10x is about the limit of what most people can hold study enough to really see well.

BTW: I used to sell hunting optics.

It may depend on how you would be using them. 10x will give you a smaller field (the area you're looking at) vs 8x42. If you need to see very specific details then you may prefer these. I do agree they will be heavier so holding up to your eyes could be uncomfortable for extended periods of time, like an entire football game. Check the weights in the descriptions. Also check to see if they are water resistant. Especially important if you plan to be in dampness or rainy season. I agree with the other comments here.

Vortex also has a really good VIP warranty policy.
"VIP stands for a Very Important Promise to you, our customer. We will repair or replace your Vortex® product in the event it becomes damaged or defective—at no charge to you. If we cannot repair your product, we will replace it with a product in perfect working order of equal or better physical condition."

edit: I would go with the crossfire if your planning on using these to see big objects in plain view but at a distance. (plays or sporting events)
I would buy the vipers as an entry level binocular from bird watching to hunting. I believe vortex lines of glass goes from crossfire to diamondback to viper to razor in ascending quality and price. I have a pair of razor 12x50 uhd and use it on a tripod as my glassing binos. All in all both are from a great company with an outstanding warranty.

I checked and the Vipers are $130 more on Amazon, so yes, they are a good deal. What makes or breaks the deal is intended use. 10x is a lot of magnification. {f you hunt or watch sports from the nosebleed seats then the 10x42 Vipers will rock. If you watch a lot of auto racing the wider field of view of an 8x would usually be better. BTW I put my money where my mouth is and ordered the 10x42 Viper HDs to supplement my older 8x42 Vipers.

The rough and dirty of it is that it's all about the lens coatings. When light is being transmitted through a lens, the light changes speed, is refracted, is reflected, and is diffused differently at all points of the spherical surface of the lens. And when these changes happen, the eye perceives the image as blurrier than it otherwise would. However, the higher quality optics coatings on expensive optical glass have the ability to slow the light on certain areas of the lens, redirect it, and focus it such that the light arrives at your eye in much the same way that it would were it to have not passed through a medium different than the air around us. The upside of this is that the eye perceives a clearer image under all conditions. It also has the ability to aid in light pass through such that a greater amount of light is available to the eye under low light conditions and thus you can see more clearly under adverse lighting conditions such as dawn or dusk. These coatings applications are a highly precise process and hence the cost difference between higher quality coatings can dramatically increase the price. However, if you look through high quality optics under adverse lighting conditions, you'll know exactly where the money went.

1000% yes. They have one of the best warranties in the business especially since they cover stupid. They don't ask for proof of purchase, they pay for shipping, it also covers the non original buyer and it is a lifetime warranty. As well they sell blemished products and they are covered by the same warranty.

I did a warranty claim and all they asked was what's the model and what's the problem. That is it.

these Vipers may be an older version - still a good deal, but could be why they are on clearance - from B&H website concerning the 2018 (new) version - "This updated 2018 version of the Vortex Viper HD 10x42 Binoculars get upgraded with a wider field of view and longer eye relief from the previous iteration to make views more spacious and viewing through them easier and more comfortable."

Assuming price parity, how do people like the Vipers vs the Nikon M7 for birdwatching? I get the impression the Viper is geared more towards hunting use and the optics are tuned for that case.

(I have read all the reviews. Please don't give me links to or excerpts from reviews.)
