You forgot to mention the $1390 destination fee, $425 for wall connector, $230 for mobile charger, $250 non-refundable order fee.

Tesla Model 3 RWD starts at $40,240 but is now eligible for the full $7,500 federal tax credit (income limits apply). Previously, it was only eligible for $3,750. This makes the starting price $32,740 after tax credit.

Deal is even sweeter if you live in a state with additional credits:

VT: $26,320
MA: $26,830
PA: $27,330
RI: $27,820
DE: $27,820
NY: $28,320
CA: $28,330
CO: $28,330
CT: $29,030
ME: $29,320

Full tax credit details below, but the following income limits apply:

$300,000 for married couples filing jointly
$225,000 for heads of households
$150,000 for all other filers

NO IT DOES NOT.

Withholding is totally irrelevant to qualifying for the credit.

If you're unclear on this go read a 1040.

The part where you compute tax liability is lines 16 through 24.

THAT is where the $7500 EV credit comes off.

Your withholdings aren't even looked at until after that on line 25+

This is also not correct.

The Child Tax Credit is worth a maximum of $2,000 per qualifying child. Up to $1,600 is refundable for the 2023 tax year.

Refundable credits are computed AFTER non-refundable ones-- so the CTC is only "worth" $400 off your tax burden for these purposes- the $1600 left is refundable.

Thus if you had say $7900 in tax burden and one CTC and one EV credit, your tax burden would go to $0 and you'd get a full refund of the $1600 refundable part of the CTC

I already filed taxes for 2022. To get the tax credit, do they look at 2022 income or 2023 income now.

Right now is not a particularly good time to buy a Model 3

Reasons
- Starting 2024, federal EV discount will be at point of sale
- Cheaper EV models in the horizon (e.g. 25K Model 2)
- Impending Model 3 Refresh + growing Model 3 inventory could mean further price cuts.

Additional things to consider:
- Pre-refresh Model 3 (HW 3 + Vision only) is unlikely to support true FSD. Park Assist, autopilot (phantom braking), autowipers don't work perfectly either.
- Insurance on Model 3 can be a LOT higher, esp for younger drivers but even for older drivers.
- Poor build quality (e.g. panel gaps), poor repairability, poor NVH, being more prone to cracked windshields/scratched paint/curb rash, need for more frequent tire rotations
- Supercharging can actually be comparable/more expensive than gas. Also charging above 80% takes a long time.
- HW range will be a lot less than the advertised range, esp during winter

All this said, if you need to buy a EV right now, Model 3 is probably one of the best values for the money at 37.8k + federal/state tax rebates

It's only applies to the state part of the sales tax, not the county or city taxes. The last time I looked into it I was still going to have to pay about 6% of the normal 10%. That fact, plus the high destination fee and other charges added up to make it a lukewarm deal. It's slowly getting better but still has some way to go IMO.

Yet, mach-e is solid built, when Tesla would rattle and sqeak after a month.

Mache is the way to go over base m3
Or possibly people like to complain about Teslas and new owners are hypersensitive when its so much more quite when there is no engine.

Wait it will be under 20k soon. Their maintenance is too controlled and takes months to fix a tire issue. I have seen it in SE state.

Pretty crap cars. Glad price is coming down. They need to up their quality. The electric and tech component is great though.

Hopefully the updated M3 fixes the QC issues.
