Cloud storage based. Paperweight when the company dies
Been digitizing a bunch of photos for family members, these frames have worked very well as gifts to display them. It does pass through their service, but has been relatively reliable over the past year+ (only one outage of about a day). It can tap into a google photo album, along most of the other cloud based storage options. It also has a decent set up process along with some remote settings options. You can definitely go cheaper, but this is a good option if you have the budget for it.
That is also a good reason to buy it from Costco given their generous return policy. Just save the receipt and I would bet if the frame company went under in five years Costco would replace/refund you.

I'm using old android tablets and Fire HD 10 for the digital photo frames.
About the apps, you can use gFolio / pixFolio $4 or Fotoo - Photo Frame Slideshow (free with limitation)

about the share drive, I suggest to use the Google Drive, you should create new account. Because you can share the drive with Write permission for your family, your friends...
I use Fotoo (paid version) on an old Android tablet and feed it photos from my local NAS.

How have you been able to run it on a Fire HD? I haven't.

instead of the Ras Pi, you can buy an android TV stick... for example GG ChromeCast, Amz Fire stick...
Can either of these display local photos? Which app?

Everyone is missing the draw of these frames. Yea you can setup other devices to do the same thing, but adding and removing photos is super easy and convenient from your phone anywhere. On iPhone photos app its just share-> Aura and its done. You can share the account from a grandparent frame to multiple people to upload individually, and also upload to multiple frames in one go. My parents can easily figure this out and add photos on their own. I'm very tech savvy, and I have no desire to explain some hack to use a google photos album for people to share to and such. This is plug in and done. I'm hoping the company doesn't go under, but its a small gamble with any cloud device.

The unit looks nice, the screen is bright and crisp, and the app interface is simple and works well. No complaints, especially for $100. Trying to add frames to my Echo Show 15 is a PITA compared to the Aura.
Makes sense. Do you need to pay for storage when using Share with Aura? I guess where are photos stored with this use case.

Does anyone know if it's cheaper in the warehouse?

I never thought about using a old iPad for a picture frame. I might look into that. I hate apple devices. I'm just used to Google. So I have a old iPad I never really used because it frustrated me.

I like this deal bc I want the easiest thing for my mom.... and me. I use Google best hubs at home, but for $99 I think I'll add one to my house too.

Just buy a Facebook Portal. For 40-60 $ you get picture, internet (youtube, etc.) and can use as a bluetooth speaker. Well built quality to me.

I have this frame for several years. Couple of things to keep in mind.
* The frame only works when it is online. a very limited buffer storage on the frame itself.
* The frame's WiFi only works in 2.4GHz band, and then I believe in g and n. The "manual" and support online is murky about the technical details.
* The app is crappy, as when I had to change the WiFi name to connect, it could not connect to the frame using BT from several Android 12 devices. I ended up changing the new router's SID and the password to the match the old ones.
* the support is over the message on their website only, no live person.
* It is hard to organize the photos in the app ( and frame) they just served in the same order.

An upside, and a great one, anyone in your frame membership can upload or email photos to the frame.

Hope this helps

Got two of these last Xmas for the same price (maybe $90 at warehouse?) at Costco, one for me, the other for my parents. So far we are very happy with the frames, wish they offered a larger version at a decent price. I've attempted a number of homegrown digital photo frames on my own, i.e., Firestick connected to spare monitor cycling through my Amazon photos, but this thing is sooo much more convenient.

Seems like a great alternative to backup photos/videos since Aura frame has unlimited storage. I paid $99/year for google storage alone. With Aura, I can transfer photo/video from google photo to free up lots of space so I can downgrade my storage capacity. I'm sure it comes with limitations in term of sharing, features, etc.

Anybody knows if it has a battery that holds some hours of use without plugging in the AC fixed to a certain place?

Is there a good digital frame with local storage (SD or micro SD)? I rather not go to the cloud.

I bought a pair of these for parents on both sides so we can easily share pics of the grandkids straight from our phones. I've got to admit, digital frames have come a long way. The app makes it super simple to setup and manage remotely which is a godsend for recipients who are not tech savvy. I love that I can invite others to add to the frame. I just simply share my photos from my phone to the app, choose the destination frame and voila.

I know there's hesitation because the company might stop supporting the product or they put up a paywall, but for the convenience these provide, I'll gladly take the risk and at least get a few years of joy out of them. Rather than fiddle with the other homegrown solutions, this frame is by far the best. Saves me time and headaches. Besides, you can purchase with confidence from Costco and try a return later.

One complaint would be how thick the frame is. It's quite chunky indeed and there's no way to wall mount. They're meant to be just standing on its own.
