Pretty novel idea. So weird no one has ever thought of it. Have you ever heard of speed traps where a city would intentionally drop the speed on a specific road and plant a pig to collect tickets. So you would be going 45 at the limit you miss one sign and now you are going 45 in 30 with a pig on your ass.

No you didn't. Back then the "similar" detector was the R3 (I think it was out by then) and it was $350 on the best deal you could find. If it was even ever that low in 2018. You may have bought an R1 which is what I run and not comparable to this since it lacks gps

This is NOT true. Even in the municipalities that can afford laser guns, a good amount of the police force still use radar guns. Laser can only be used from a perfectly still vantage point, so it's usually only used in speed traps. Radar can be used by moving police cars. And many more LEOs are certified in radar use than they are in using LIDAR.

If you care about speed countermeasures, you CANNOT only use a laser blocker and consider yourself safe. In fact, if you have to choose between one and the other, you're safer with just a radar detector.

R4 and R8 got their Bluetooth enabled via firmware a couple months ago too.

Is it worth the money to upgrade from the R3?

I'm considering it. The R3 was on sale at best buy for 280 recently and I considered getting a second one for our second vehicle... Maybe I'll get one of these R4s instead.

I'd definitely get the R4 if it was choosing between it and the R3. R3 has been good to me though...not one speeding ticket in 5 or 6 years (can't remember the exact year I bought it) I like the jamming capability upcoming. I'm talking myself into it as you can see. Lol

I wonder how this falls with Sam's return policy. Is it lifetime?

This is basically one of the best radar detectors for this price range if you don't need to have arrows for where the signal is coming from. I really love my R7. Make sure to check what type of signals your local and state enforcement uses. If it's laser, these radar detectors won't help you as much as others unless you do multi-state roadtrips.

Question to the crowd, do you guys trust renewed/refurbished detectors? Sometimes I wonder if it's worth it because of it's not working correctly, you're not really going to know...same with air filters and stuff.

My r7 works pretty well except when it required service. It took 2 months to resolve the issues. Their customer support is atrocious and when I finally filed a BBB dispute their relations manager flat out lied; thankfully had supportive screenshots to prove my case. Good product. Shit company.

I'm hoping the filtering has advanced enough to stop a lot of the false detects from other cars. My older Escort seems to be more of a car detector.

The newer detectors do alot better.. I upgraded from a 9500ix to r3 then r7, much quieter on the K band falses... I started driving with just Ka band enabled since that's all that's run near me anyways.

I imagine the jammers are going to be $1500 give or take... ALP is coming in at 1700 - 1900 for a similar setup.. they just announced the r9 custom installed pricing around 2500 (4 jammer heads, 2 radar units for arrows)

I don't drive where that kind of investment would be worthwhile - and if it was, until ALP is dethroned, or it's half the price.. I'd go ALP
