If you're not in a rush & looking for another adventure, the auto train is a nice option. Why? No TSA. Bring your own food/drink. Electrical outlets at your seats. Large, roomy reclining seats. You can get up, walk around to another train car. Car rentals cost more than putting the same size car you'd put on the train. You load your entire car with your luggage and don't need to drag them through an airport.

2 hours total for round trip air from NY to FL and back? Do you live in the Airport Terminal? If I can get from my house to my seat on the outgoing flight in only 2 hours I'm amazed. Confused

For a passenger and vehicle. An expensive slow way to make the trip on their schedule, not yours. Guess it could be a deal if you're moving or something and don't have a driver for your car, I don't know. Amtrak is an option that works for me about 1/200 times I look into it, and even then it's expensive and slow.

For short trips, you are right. Just get a rental car and it's cheaper flying.

Now if you're moving maybe makes sense.

As a side note uship costs 300 to 550$ door to door.

We did the auto train once when moving and it was a lot of fun. The target market here is mostly snowbirds because it really caters to people who need their car but don't want to have to do the roadtrip. Second would be other long-term vacationers where a rental car would be too costly.

It can make sense. And airports are horrible in comparison. Just too bad we do don't have about 10 of these criss-crossing the nation.

There are a lot of youtubers who have documented their travels on this trip. It seems like a fun but very long and tedious little adventure. Don't go by what Amtrak says the travel time is. The total time from the time you leave your house till the time you get to Florida and get your car can be more than 24 hours. The wait to get your car loaded is on average 3 or more hours. A little less for unloading.

Amtrak runs this train mostly for snowbirds: Retirees living primarily in the Northeast(ish) who spend months in Florida over the winter. They need their car each place, but no longer relish the idea of a 20+ hour drive to get there.

Not sure where you got those prices but it's $285 for your car.
Priority offloading is $95 (ensures your car will be one of the first 30 cars off the train.)
