If you're not in a rush & looking for another adventure, the auto train is a nice option. Why? No TSA. Bring your own food/drink. Electrical outlets at your seats. Large, roomy reclining seats. You can get up, walk around to another train car. Car rentals cost more than putting the same size car you'd put on the train. You load your entire car with your luggage and don't need to drag them through an airport.

I've seen a couple of comments saying it's a long trip, and that's true if you're comparing it to flying, but not if the comparison is to driving. The train leaves in the afternoon and arrives the following morning. In the meantime, instead of spending roughly the same number of hours on the highway, you get to relax, enjoy the scenery and food (which was good when I rode it), and even sleep. As for the expense, as someone already pointed out, you have to take into account the value of having your car transported with you.

P.S. One thing I don't remember seeing anyone else point out is that dinner is included, and I found the Auto Train food to be surprisingly good.

Having a vehicle transported is the main advantage of the Auto Train over flying, so if you don't have a vehicle there's not much point unless you just want to enjoy the scenery -- which is very nice most of the time (i.e., when you're outside urban areas).

I know someone else already pointed out that the seats are more spacious than those on airplanes, and that's certainly true. I'd add that the Amtrak trains I've been on were much more sparsely occupied than most flights I've taken, so unless you're using it for a commute in the Northeast Corridor, it's highly likely that you'll find it easy to occupy two empty seats next to one another if that helps with your laptop / monitor situation And if you're willing and able to splurge a bit, you can get a whole room(ette) of your own with plenty of space.

The train isn't a very practical way of traveling for most people, but in my opinion it's definitely a more pleasant and relaxing way than flying or driving and is a good choice when you have the time and money.

Not sure about that time estimate, but this is absolutely a blast. I was a single father with a toddler and a 6YO, and I simply packed everything but our overnight backpacks in the vehicle. Didn't have to lug any bags or a stroller through the terminal, go through long security lines, or anything. We just drove to Lorton, loaded up, and the girls and I watched movies and ate snacks on the train until bedtime. Then we went to our roomette to sleep and woke up in the morning with only half an hour to go until we reached Kissimmee. No baggage claim, shuttle, or car rental pickup at the other end, either. It was great!

Compared to air travel, it's quite the opposite. Even on a dirext flight to Orlando we had to pay to park, take a shuttle to the terminal, check bags/stroller/car seats/anything else we needed, go through long TSA line, hoof it to the gate, wait at the gate for a delay, stand in line to shuffle on board, sit through a crowded flight, deboard, retrieve bags, take a shuttle to the rental lot, wait in line, go through the actual process of checking out the car, and load up. For anyone within short driving distance of Lorton, VA, Autotrain is a much simpler and comfortable experience for getting to central FL. That's especially true if you have young kids and/or want to take things that are inconvenient to take on a flight, like golf clubs, bicycles, fishing gear, car seats, etc. You just pack that stuff in your vehicle and enjoy the trip. Not that I'd go to Florida anymore.

I wonder if they will incorporate EV charging on board. Might make a "road trip" a lot easier for those who don't have an ICE.
Or maybe for those who want to do the road trip but not round trip?

Also anybody have experience with this trip? Curious if you have access to your car during the trip. Someone mentioned leaving luggage in the car. Would keeping a pet in the car be feasible? Would need access to the car for it to work.

Pack a carry-on bag. Pack your car like your suitcase. But be sure to bring acarry-on bag for your trip. The Auto Train has no checked baggage service and you will not have access your car during the journey. Any valuables should not be left in your vehicle.
