So the M1 Mac Mini could make sense for some users over the M2, if they don't do things graphic intensive. The M1 has full speed storage, while the M2 base version storage is half the speed of the M1. They switched to a single chip for the 256GB versus using two 128GB chips. Processor speed is in the 15% range faster. Graphics gets two more cores. $100 savings versus the M2 education or refurb $499 price. Tough call for me but I took the older M1 for the 20% savings. May be the right call for some users, but there is a summary on the $100 difference.

I know some people poopoo Macs for any number of reasons. I got a Mac mini m1 a bit after launch, used it for a year, them sold it and built a gaming desktop. I lost almost no money on resale. It's a slick little package. If you haven't played in the Mac ecosystem for a couple of decades, pick up a Mac mini and take it for a whirl. You might like it, and if you don't, sell it. Chalk it up to a few bucks on an interesting experience.

Great price. Faster than the newer M2 version due to Apple using a slower storage configuration

buy and return if needed. The new macs would be at least $499 which was the best deal for starter Mac Mini. I think could wishfull thinking on the brand new mac mini though. 15" AIR is supposed to be Star but rumors of new models for MacPro/Studio showed up in code.
Good point. I looked at PC Connection's return policy: 15% restocking fee (unopened or opened), return shipping paid by buyer. Not great, but they're not primarily selling to individuals, so it's understandable.

Seems like a nice deal. Thinking of getting one for my sister for her phd, but not urgent. Are we hodling the lime for this to get cheaper? I keep seeing deals for mac minis but not able to keep up with the trend.

You could have said:

I got an RTX 3070 in early 2021, used it for a year, sold it at a premium in early 2022. It is a nice little card. If you have never owned an NVidia card, try it. If you don't like it, sell it for a premium.

I bought a Tesla model 3 in early 2021, used it for a year, sold it and earned a few thousand in early 2022. It is an interesting car. If you haven't tried an electric car, pick it up. If you don't like it, sell it for a premium.

I think the common thing between your recommendation and my theoretical situations are that we need to invent a time machine to go back to early 2021.

(In seriousness, not that this isn't a good price for a Mac Mini, just pointing out that your experience offers not a lot of support due to being in a different timeframe. In fact, if you kept your Mini for 2 years instead of 1, you would have seen a significant loss of value in its resale)

This is now the clearance season for the M1 Mini. So deals can be higher or lower depending on whether you can find stock at the right time. You can have one of a lifetime deals with clearance, but they are either in store or with very limited quantities.

The M2 Mini won't hit clearance until the M3 is out, which will likely be between late 2024 and late 2025. Without clearance, the sales will be $500 but won't go lower.

So I think you should jump in if you think the price is right. Because it might be difficult to find another clearance.

Probably an in-store clearance deal. Which would be out of stock for most stores.

Can you run any other OS on these? Seems like nice hardware, but not really invested in the apple echo system.

Not a bad idea but these are well sought after. I doubt the price will drop more.

What are the downsides of plugging a USB-C ssd into the computer, vs having a TB built in?

Can you still back up your phone, or run VMs on the USB-C SSD?

The point of apple making the chip is so their is can take advantage of every feature of that chip to make the system faster.

It took 3 years for the M2 to come out. And the M2 has been as low as 500 just last month. There aren't gonna be any further price drops until late 2024

Updated studio and pro, 15" air, so time to pull the trigger! 10GBe model for $30 more seems to be a great deal.
