Do NOT buy a new MBPro until after WWDC. You have been warned.

That's a fair warning. But I don't think 15 inch MBA will compete with 16 inch MBP. People who choose this are definitely working professionals with well-defined and heavy workflows. That's why the pro line makes more sense. A 15 inch MBA sounds to me is more suitable for casual business users with an interest in larger screen.

A 15" Air could blow it away for many people, especially if it's available with 512 or 1TB storage. 14" is too small for me, 16" is huge and heavy. And very expensive for users who need lots of storage. 512 in a "pro" is ridiculous. My 2015 MBPro has 1TB.

This is a dumbed down M1Max too because of the 512GB drive. It has 24 GPU cores instead of the normal 32 that comes with the 1TB+ drive.

Why is 32 cores "normal" but the 24 that come with the base model "dumbed down"?

To me, 24 is stock and 32 is an upgrade (as is the 1TB that you need to get the 32 cores).

I disagree with almost everything here but you know what IS ridiculous? 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD (slow at that) in a $1200+ laptop. Then to have the gall to charge your loyal customer $600 to upgrade to 16GB RAM and 512GB (what should be the base) which is about 8X the market price.

Exactly. But this is what Supply Chain Tim Apple does: soldered everything, no user-serviceable upgrades, increased capacity costing 4x more than a Windows device would. Plus accelerated obsolescence and dropping of support since 2016 models:

Apple intentionally makes their machines non expandable, get at least 1 terabyte. In the meantime I am using a 2017 Air with 1 TB and it cost $200.

Mid-2015 MBPro here. Refurb. Purchased off eBay with a 2-year Allstate warranty. Expanded the included stock 256 storage to 1 TB. Happily running Mojave. Switched to Firefox this week since Chromium is dropping Mojave support and its devs decided to present a non-removable nag message to "upgrade": Chrome, Brave, etc. I'm refusing to do that because Catalina is a pig, added nothing of value, and blocked the use of legacy apps that I use.

Agree or disagree, I was just mentioning this to someone who was gonna pay $2300 for the "normal" CPU that it is not as powerful as the much much more common M1 Max 1 TB + model

No one would know that because you didn't quote the poster you were mentioning this to.

Looks more like a general statement you are making.

Which may well drop in price after WWDC, or better options become available.

Thanks to the game porting kit announced at WWDC, M1 Max has suddenly become way more desirable. Folks in Reddit are sharing videos of existing hardware like MacBook Pro M2 Max and M1 Max playing Diablo IV and Cyberpunk at very playable frame rates. The new 15" MBA would get a third the fps (at best) as a 2 year old M1 Max 32 core at DX12 games.

I have the 4TB 14" Pro with M1 Max. Absolutely love iit.

Don't make the mistake in not getting the right amount of storage you need.
