Just be aware you have to completely penetrate the meat to the line in the middle of the probe because that part won't survive oven temperatures and it is as big around as a pen. So, it can't really be used for small pieces of meat like steaks or chicken breasts. Other than that it seems to work very well.

I got one of these a few weeks ago. The internal temperature seems to be very accurate and gives consistent readings throughout a long smoke/grill session. It is about the thickness of a pen and I was able to get it far enough into a chicken thigh without issue, but it would probably struggle with smaller or thinner steak cuts.

The one disappointment for me in this is the ambient temp reading is much slower to give an accurate reading and sometimes never catches up to what my actual smoker temp gauge reads. It's a small sacrifice to eliminate the wires and I plan on keeping it regardless, but just know that I can't fully trust the ambient temperature reading from my phone.

Otherwise, range and battery life seem consistent with the advertised info. At this price, the convenience and ease of use makes it an easy choice. Just don't expect perfection.

Thanks for the info. You sold me on one. Also thanks to the OP for posting.

Regarding your ambient temp...are you sure the gauge on the smoker is accurate? Also with the probe being close to the meat it's probably going to be a bit cooler than real ambient.

A neat feature of the app is after it has been running for awhile it can project how long it will take for the meat to reach the target temp. I used it on a pork shoulder recently and it was fairly accurate.

I do believe my smoker gauge to be accurate as I have used another thermometer to verify before. It's possible the meat is throwing it off I suppose but I feel like after an hour it should be more accurate. It did better on a smoke greater than 2 hours than it did on the 1 hour tri tip steak.

Makes sense. Yeah a 165F piece of meat will throw off the thermometer that's only a fraction of an inch away in a 250F smoker.

For those who have this, does the app require any sort of internet access after initial download (or require signing up for an account)?

Essentially will this thermometer still work if manufacturer were to go belly up?

is there plastic on the end of the probe itself? or is it a metal housing? I hate having plastic inside a hot cooking box
