Maybe just hit up harbor freight instead. They have a 20-ton with their membership discount for $40 https://www.harborfreig

every jack is dangerous without jackstand
Much is dependent on how the user sets it up for the lifting job and any associated stabilization platform or parts.
Nearly every floor jack has a bottle jack as its hydraulic lifting device.
Never rely on jacks/hydraulics after lifting and always use proper jackstands.
So far, I'm very happy with the 20 ton Torin that was from the deal 2 weeks ago, which was about the same price ($33.05).
I own it from previous slick deal.
notice, the top has a screw extension, instead of internal cylinder that expands further as you pump.
point being, any vehicle actually requiring 12t jack can NOT be serviced by this as there is not enough lift.
-have f350 and it is impossible to change a tire with this jack as there is nit enough lift.

what jacks would work for your truck? I recently changed a tire on an mdx and the jack that came with the car was a workout.
like this, not sure if good but in my ccc account.
note, this is 8 ton, which is still overkill. 6 Ton double ram jack is the sweet spot if your lifting just one side of truck.

The problem you're having tho, is that your 12 ton certainly won't lift the tires off the ground IF you're jacking it by the frame/suspension.
It will lift the tires off the ground if you jack directly under the axle.
I see many of the negative reviews come from users who don't know what they're doing. Many cases of "jack won't lower" are USER error, as they have air trapped in the hydraulic system that they never bothered to bleed out when they received the jack new.
This often occurs during shipping, when the jack is turned upside down and all around in transit.
For instance, when I received and unboxed my 20 ton jack, the very first thing I did was let it sit upright for 15-30 minutes, valve open 1 turn, then after that 15-30 minutes, slowly pump the jack with the valve open at least a dozen times, which is Step 1.
Then close the valve, pump to full max lift and keep slowly pumping at least 20 more times. Then open the valve and slowly lower the ram. Let it sit 15 minutes. For 'extra' insurance you can repeat Step 1.
Now you have a jack that is fully bled of all trapped air.
Floor jack are the best, especially the hydraulic ones. 3 to 5 pumps later the tire is ready to be taken out.
What these are great for is replacing walls or other supports in your house. Great for replacing a rotten deck post or jacking a temp wall into place.

You can use it for house framing projects/repairs. Glue and holding.

No jack is less or more dangerous and every jack is dangerous if there is an idiot operating it
Grabbing one to replace the one on my press, the rebuild kit for a 10 ton is now nearly $25.
