I got this on the last deal. However, the M2 Studio just came out. It's $1800 with the student discount (click on the Mac mini deal on FP) 3% cash back if you use an apple credit card. That's $54 cb. So technically paying $1746. That's $246 more for better specs: (cpu: 12 vs 10| gpu: 30 vs 24 | HMDI 2.1 vs 2.0 | Wifi 6e vs Wifi 6 | some other stuff regarding ProRes encoding that I don't understand. Also, M2 vs M1 chips. 15-18% better cpu performance. 30-35% better gpu performance.

HOWEVER, if you get this deal (M1 Mac Studio). You're saving $246 and the extra tax from the difference in price. You could spent that on something else. The M1 Mac Studio is highly capable of doing heavy video editing. You can wait for the M3 or M4 even. Or heck just ride the M1 Mac Studio until it dies. Up to you.

Is the SSD upgradable? That's a $20 SSD in a $1500 workstation class machine. Very odd.

No, it's not

It's not upgradable, unfortunately which probably makes the storage the most questionable part of this machine, and is ultimately why I didn't go for the deal last time around.

That said, the SSD is absolutely not $20 grade. It benches at around 5.5GBps read and 6.3GBps write [macworld.com] which puts it more in the tier of a 500GB Samsung 980 Pro [servethehome.com] which currently sells for around $70.

FYI, the 1TB 980 Pro is currently $66. Ships and sold by Amazon. And it comes with 2 months of Adobe Photoshop. So realistically, this 500gb SSD is not more than $25-30 no matter what the actual item is listed at. Nobody is going to buy the 500gb 980 pro for $79 when you can buy the 1TB for $66 from Amazon itself.

Totally fair with that explanation, but on its own "$20 SSD" makes it sound like it's a bargain bin DRAMless SATA SSD that's going to perform poorly, which it's not.

Agreed. I'll bump it up to $40 😀. In any case, that is a huge downside as the biggest use for such a powerful machine is media editing/creation, and 500gb is just a joke. So you need to attach an external drive to this machine for it to be usable. And that is after paying $1500 for it. smh.

I did order the M2 Mac Studio lol. Im planning to hold onto the M1 Mac Studio from Costco in case the M2 turns out to be worse somehow (like SSD being slower than M1). Will wait for the M2 reviews to come out and make my decision then.

Basically any professional video editor will add external storage, even if the SDD is maxed out to 4TB or whatever the top is.

Yeah, but then you need to buy external TB4 NVMe enclosures and make your whole setup clunky. It would have been nice if they just had a couple of m.2 NVMe slots where you could pop in 4TB each of fast Gen 4 SSDs. Also, TB4 can't reach the maximum bandwidth that the top of the line Gen 4 SSDs make available.

The 512GB SSD is barely enough for the OS, swap, and the professional software packages you are going to be using if you buy this machine. In pro use, there is almost literally no file storage on this box, and no internal upgrades. Otherwise, awesome kit.

Chances are the base M3 is going to be faster than this M1. Why get this now?
