It's tough to buy new when the same model is $200+ cheaper on Amazon with Amazon Renewed (90 day warranty). You could purchase Amazon's 2 year accidental damage warranty protection for +$66 and come out way ahead.

As for refurbished, you could buy on Amazon [amazon.com] with 5% off or this on Ebay [ebay.com] and take extra 8% off plus 2-year warranty included.

Where is the 8% off mentioned on eBay?

It's not, but shows up on checkout.

Frankly I'm contemplating returning the $279 Gateway laptop from Walmart and picking up this one for the 3K screen resolution, 16:10 aspect ratio, weighing about 1 lb lighter with improved specs. The sticking point is doubling the price.
As a casual laptop user, my main driver is a workstation, so, I think at the end I'll just save the money and keep the beater laptop.

What is the differences between all these Lenovo Slim 7 models? 7i, 7 pro, 7i evo? Is it ports? The screen? Keyboard? What? Why use such confusing model names?

If the eBay deal for the refurb 7i is still a available that might be a better option with a 12700H. 16" though. If you want the 14" same seller is also selling I think this same model for around $540.

I agree with your decision because I'm in the same boat right now. I'm between getting a workhorse laptop for under $350 or a "best bang for buck" laptop for $750. Haven't pulled the trigger on anything since 4th of July is around the corner and laptop deals seem to be within margin of one another for the last couple of months.

Be mindful of the Gateway. I got my dad one 2 years ago and the battery gave out in exactly one year right past the warranty date. It still works fine plugged in, but literally shuts off the moment you unplug it. Also has a weird HDMI error where any monitor connected to it randomly powers on and off. Not sure if that's because the battery is dead though and the pass-through power isn't enough at times.

that gateway is solid. Unless the screen is really bad, I wouldn't bother..since this one likely doesn't have an outstanding screen either
