If you have no use for the apple gc from buying at apple edu, then this would be cheaper. Plus you can use freedom bonus/amazon card and to get an extra 5% back.

How many people were actually asking for a bigger MB Air? Wasn't the whole point of the Air to be the most lightweight compact-ish bare-essentials Mac experience?
I would love one. I wish I had waited on buying the 14" pro last year and bought this instead. Larger screen size is nice and I realize I hardly use any ports anymore so pro doesn't offer much.

People want a >13" laptop from Apple that is cheaper than the Pro. This is it.

A HUGE number of people!!!!!!! If you wanted a relatively lightweight MacBook with a larger screen for a reasonable price, you were previously out of luck. The 13.6-inch MacBook Air is $1,099. The 14-inch MacBook Pro is $1999 and the 16-inch MBP is $2,499. That's a huge price gap between those larger-screen laptops and the entry-level MacBook Air.
Introducing the 15-inch MacBook Air at $1,299 has been a long time coming.

Similar boat here except got my 14" MBP last week, so luckily was able to order the new 15" Air to try out. Just got the new Air today and had time to play... and keeping the Air! The Pro is a great machine, but this guy has a larger screen and manages to weight less plus I'll get ~$600 refunded difference as well. Nowadays I can get by with the base model, especially since I get the upgrade itch every couple of years usually anyhow haha.
Is 8GB enough or should I opt for 16GB? I do mostly stuff like browsing, and office. Maybe a game or two
macOS is pretty efficient on memory and the architecture performs differently than Windows so it's hard to make an apples to apples comparison with a different device using 8GB RAM. (pun absolutely intended)
While it's true that in absolute terms more is better, for a lot of general/light use scenarios 8GB will be surprisingly adequate. I got the base M1 MacBook Air near launch that also has 8GB RAM and have had zero issues with it for simultaneous web browsing, iMessage, Discord, and syncing email.
For gaming on a computer without active heating like the MacBook Air, you'll likely run into a thermal limit before you hit a RAM limit. That said, less intensive games like Disco Elysium have still run fantastically well for me. So depending on how modern the game is that you want to play it may still be just fine.

If you literally only do those things and don't mind the rare lag then yeah 8GB is probably enough. The questionable part is "game or two" where a 3D game can occupy 4+GB of memory and that's when things may get unresponsive/crash.

All of us. Small screens are for children. I'd take a 20" Air if I could.
