Cpu is great but keep in mind that you also need a good AIO cuz it can get hot a 280mm or 360mm is a must if you want to get full potential from it.

Upgrading from a 8700k and got this with a mobo (MSI Tomahawk Z690 DDR5) combo on Newegg for $350 all in. I thought about going the 13700k and Z790 route but it'll be around $500 more. I think it's a worthy upgrade coming from a 7th gen.

Yes. Around 300% more multi-thread and 60% more single thread performance. While using similar power consumption.

Also youre looking at this backwards, the lower the resolution and graphics settings the more CPU bottlenecked a game is. So upgrading a CPU is more important to someone playing at 1080p or 1440p high than it is someone playing 4k ultra.

Not at all. I'm using a $40 Thermalright Assassin air cooler and it stays nice and cool.

Not a lot of experience with Intel processors, but someone had mentioned enabling power limits in BIOS. Are you utilizing those? Or is the air cooler doing it on the default settings?

I have not been limiting it. The CPU draws up to 200w and I have a slight overclock. Any sizeable air cooler will be fine.

Edit:..One thing to add. I do use the
thermalright contact frame which helps a lot. Recommended with Intel processors.

Got it almost 3 months ago with a nice fully outfitted Asus board and 32gb cheap ram for I think 350. Added a deep cool 360 aio for $80 bucks after sale and coupon and got a 850watt open box for $40 that was only missing a cable and manual. Microcenter is amazing

Spending 175% more for latest gen mobo and CPU would be insane. I always wait until previous gen mobo/CPU/ram combos go on crazy sales at my microcenter and can usually get at least half my money back flipping mobo, CPU, and ram. I upgrade basically every gen but one step behind.

what's a good cheap motherboard for this chip, preferably with support for ddr4, or an option with 13 and 14 gen support?

stop giving bs info, plenty of budget air cooler keeps 12700k in optimal temps. this is not 13900k running cinebench 24/7. Even 13900k can be air cooled just fine for gaming.

keep yourself updated and educated.
