What if I prefer quieter music? Is the only purpose of the amp to make it louder or is there a sound quality difference as well?
Sound quality too but will also depend on file quality and DAC because the amp will only increase the volume of what it is receiving. Weak and poor quality amp will have noise and distortion at high volume. I dont know the exact math but say these headphones will need 3x more volume than the typical headphones so if youre listening at 50% volume already then you likely need more power to hear the same volume

Kind of new to beyerdynamics but isn't the dt 880 pro the more sought after from this line? Or does anyone think one of these is a better option ?
It just comes down to your personal preference for open back (990) closed back (770) or partially open back (880).
I have the 770s, but at 32 ohms, and those already require a high volume setting from my AVR to output at a good volume. I can't imagine how much more power the 250 ohm will require.
Honestly I just bought the 770s for this price and the Hifiman Sundara for $239 open box direct from the manufacturer (free shipping & no sales tax -woohoo), and I prefer the Sundara.

I didn't realize these were 96 spl making them harder to drive then I would have thought for 32 ohms headphones thanks for pointing that out. Out of the 3 I am looking for one to give me a different sound conparing to my sennheiser. treble but maybe more tame, Soundstage, maybe some bass.
How are these compared to the SHP 9500 in terms of the open back comfortability? My ears get warm quickly, and so far the SHP 9500 are the only ones thats been able to keep my ears cool.

Well I highly recommend the Hifiman Sundara open box for $239 - very different and perhaps superior in many ways (sound stage being the main one) due to the planar magnetic drivers. They feel premium as well, and they're pretty much unanimously well reviewed, known widely as the best headphones possible for under $500.
Great deal. I have both, paid $130 for each I think. I prefer the 990 open back model, they breathe better, but I switch to the 770s when I have some background noise (kids!). I just replaced the ear pads on the 990s and they're like new again after a few years now.
Pro tip: if they feel tight on the head, you can give flex the headband (it's metal) and dial in a looser fit if you're sensitive like me.
